A minimum of 6 million people including about 2 million children belonging to 9 out of the total 18 districts of West Bengal were drinking arsenic contaminated water which contains arsenic more than the maximum permissible limit set by WHO (which is 50 mg/l) and about 300,000 are already suffering from arsenic related diseases.
This finding proves that most probably these companies are using ground water from contaminated districts for their injection ampoules and while water was purified, arsenic was properly removed in some batches, the same had not been done always.

This indicates that the JE virus is in recent circulation in the population of these four districts, and as the majority of children lack substantial immunity to JE virus, they may be affected by an epidemic.
CONCLUSION: Children up to 10 y of age in the four districts of West Bengal are mostly non-immune to JE virus.

 Rediff On The NeT: Arsenic poisoning hits parts of Tripura
After West Bengal and the bordering districts of Bangladesh, Tripura is also being affected by arsenic poisoning, caused by increased use of tainted ground water.
Though Comilla and Sylhet districts of Bangladesh, bordering west Tripura's Sonamura, Bishalgarh and Khowai sub-divisions, are worst-affected, these officials said other parts of the state also face the threat, specially Belonia in south Tripura and Kailashawar in north Tripura.

Arsenic contamination of groundwater and its human consequences in three villages from two districts of the state of West Bengal in the eastern part of India was first brought to attention in 1982.
Yet the Government of West Bengal has steadily ignored or deliberately reduced the extent of this environmental hazard.
In August 2000 a high-ranking official of the state government told in an international meeting in Bangladesh that West Bengal had only 450 arsenic patients from all arsenic affected districts and that arsenic-free drinking water is supplied to people in the affected areas through a pipeline network.

Poor management and negligence has compelled villagers in several districts of West Bengal to drink water contaminated by arsenic even 18 years after the calamity was first discovered.
Till January, 1999 the status of the arsenic calamity in West Bengal was like this: 1000 villages/ wards in 69 blocks are affected in 9 districts (including southern part of Calcutta).
So far from the affected 9 districts we have examined 29,000 people from arsenic affected villages of 7 districts (Hooghly and Howrah have not yet covered for patient) and 14% have been identified with skin lesions.
