Conversely, Maréchal (Gabin), who—it is revealed was a mechanic in Paris—is not as cultured, and later in the film is unable to communicate adequately with Elsa (Parlo) in German, and likewise she cannot speak French.
In fact, Maréchal does not have much in common with those in his class, each of whom have different interests and are not worldly in their views or education.
For instance, Elsa (Dita Parlo), the German widow, shows photos to Maréchal (Gabin) and Rosenthal (Dalio) of her husband and her brothers who were killed, respectively, at the battles of Verdun, Liège, Charleroi, and Tannenberg.

 slant // magazine.com: Film Review - L'Atalante
The new bride Juliette (Dita Parlo) is a French country girl who, at the start of the film, has never been outside of her close-knit and humble community.
She is swung on a strut from the shore to the ship by the fleshy first mate, Jules (Michel Simon), whose swaggering brusqueness in berating the cabin boy is magnificently undercut by Vigo's simultaneous establishment of his love for his pet cats.
An Erotica-era Madonna, who insisted that the initials "D.P." be etched into her faux gold tooth in a reference to Dita Parlo, clearly understood and respected the monumental feminine power of this sequence.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: L'Atalante | Deseret Morning News Web edition
Needless to say, fans are rejoicing since "L'Atalante" has been the subject of a restoration project, with 10 minutes of missing footage replaced, the soundtrack cleaned up (and probably sounding better than when the film was first released) and the gorgeous fl-and-white cinematography restored to its original splendor.
The story of "L'Atalante" is deceptively simple, with the barge's young captain Jean (Jean Daste) being married in the opening scenes, and taking his new wife Juliette (Dita Parlo) aboard the barge, accompanied by a colorful older sailor named Peres Jules (Michel Simon) and a cabin boy (Louis Lefevre).
Dita Parlo is also a standout and went on to play a role in Jean Renoir's "The Grand Illusion," also considered one of the great films of all time.

When Parlo walks along the top of her new, floating home -- her dazzling, white bridal dress a stunning contrast to the fls and grays of the river and river bank in the background and the vessel under her feet -- it's but one of a hundred stunning images.
At one point, after Parlo, sick of the waterbound life, has left her new husband, the movie cuts from one separated lover to the other, as they toss and turn in their respective beds, caressing their bodies.
He smokes cigarettes with his navel and charms Parlo with stories from his trips around the world and with a collection of curios that includes a sawfish's bill and the embalmed hands of a departed friend.

Pierre Fresnay is the countercurrent of Stroheim's character an admirable French officer who is conscious of all the changes that are happening in the turmoil of WW I. Jean Gabin's character on the other hand is less refined and more realistic, he portrays the surviving 'middle class'.
Dita Parlo, who also starred in Jean Vigo's 'L'Atalante' just five years earlier plays Else, the German farm woman who warmly looks after two escaped POW's.
Her character is meant to represent the suffering of the women and children that stay behind while their husbands or brothers could meat their deaths at any moment.

He has just married Juliette (Dita Parlo, also featured in Grand Illusion) and, for their honeymoon—or maybe for their entire married life—has taken her aboard his unglamorous vessel for a trip up the Seine.
L'Atalante is simultaneously a paean to evanescence and, however paradoxically, an enduring embodiment of the same concept: a wispish film from a short-lived director that has nonetheless been dreamed and re-dreamed, never the same way twice, for almost 70 years.

After their wedding, Juliette (Dita Parlo) and Jean (Jean Daste) set out on L'Atalante, the river barge that Jean captains.

Instead it concentrates on the personal relationships that go on between enemies in a seemingly “gentlemanly” war: Frenchmen Jean Gabin and Pierre Fresnay are held prisoner in German POW camps, but their kindhearted overseer (Erich Von Stroheim) still takes pains to go through all highly bred formalities with them.
Dita Parlo is excellent in a supporting role as a German farmer who takes the two in after they escape from the camp, even though her own husband was killed on the battlefield by the French.
Renoir’s marvelous film ably raises questions of just who is in the right when war is brought about, and humankind’s inability to completely lose their humanity when involved in them.

The story is fairy-tale simple, yet told with implications that are absolutely modern: this combination of magical and social realism is what Wong Kar-Wai and Lars von Trier are groping for.
Jean (Jean Daste), the newly married barge captain, takes his bride Juliette (Dita Parlo) aboard L'Atalante to join the rest of the crew--a jocular, rowdy second mate named Father Jules (Michel Simon, France's answer to Charles Laughton) and his assistant, apparently a half-wit.

There is a strange pathos and dignity in von Stroheim’s performance that makes his probably the most sympathetic character in the film - although Dita Parlo’s moving small part as Elsa at the end of the film would be a very close second.
