The settlement stands around a crossroads with Brighton to the South, Haywards Heath to the North, Keymer and Hassocks to the west and Lewes to the East and is built on a slight spur of land between the Downs to the South and Lodge Hill to the north.
Ditchling Beacon is an Early Iron Age contour hillfort that sits on the Downs just south of the village of Ditchling and commands a grand view of the weald to the north.
North of Ditchling village on Ditchling Common, there is a post which marks the spot where Jacob Harris, a pedlar, was hanged in 1734 for the murder of Richard Miles.

 Welcome to Ditchling Players
The name of the Ditchling Players has been in existence since January 1945 although there was has been an active drama group in the village of Ditchling going back for many years prior to that date.
Since its inception the Players have always been active in both village and county events and in 1972 when the Village Hall was rebuilt the Players were able to co-operate with the architect with the result that we now have one of the best amateur stages in the district.
Ditchling Players celebrated their 60th Anniversary with a Garden Party at Limberlost in the village.

Ditchling Common was established as a country park by East Sussex County Council in 1974.
The country park trail is a mile long, (0.5 km) and passes through oak trees, grassland and an area of scrub.

Not surprising then that Ditchling Museum is known for its outstanding art collection and that it has managed to attract a bevy of celebrities and art world buffs to participate in selecting items from that collection.
The portrait of Amy Sawyer, a Ditchling artist and playwright, is by Rose Cobban and was chosen for the exhibition by actors Sir Donald and Leon Sinden who remember it hanging in the village hall where they first performed on stage.

Local rugby team, Ditchling 'Wild Pigs', returned from their recent Dutch tour victorious, after winning the tournament, hosted by old friends Betuwe RFC to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
An initial no alcohol policy for players during the tournament was soon axed when the 'Wild Pigs' suffered an early setback in their first group game against the hosts Betuwe.
In a move of tactical brilliance and tour tradition a pre match warm up of a couple of jugs of ale were called for.

Her book Vegetable Dyes was published by Pepler in 1916, before the Ditchling Press was established, but whilst the community of craft workers was being formed.
Mairet was never part of the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic, as she was not a Catholic, but she found it beneficial to live near like minded artists.
Mairet set up her workshop at Gospels in Ditchling and taught many talented handweavers, including Elizabeth Peacock, and others who remained in the area.

The regular collectors on the Ditchling round will be David Saunders and Michael Gunn, with Simon Bransbury filling in for holidays and other eventualities.

In ancient European folklore, the dog is seen as both the guardian and consumer of dead spirits, especially with the Wild Hunt where a pack of dogs with a master of the hunt flies through the sky looking for lost souls.
Nearby is the earthworks of Ditchling Beacon hillfort where as late as 1933, a wild hunt has been heard flying overhead with the sound of horses hooves and yapping dogs.
This was a common tale told by the shepherds who worked on this area of the downs, who would say their sheepdogs would crouch down and look upwards wimpering because the witch-hounds were passing overhead.

Ditchling Common is now managed as a Country Park by the County Council to ensure that the activities of visitors, walkers and horse-riders are compatible with the conservation of commonland.
The common was part of the Manor of Ditchling, overseen by the Reeve, and villagers holding commoners' rights could graze cattle, horses and sheep although the grazing of geese was forbidden!
A feast was held annually at the Royal Oak, to the north of the common, known as Horn Fair when cattle were brought to be left in the charge of the Reeve for the summer months.

The 1st Ditchling Beaver Scouts of West Sussex completed their Gimmie 5 challenge, last Saturday.
The Gimmie 5 Challenge is a national event which harnesses the spirit of adventure to raise money to enable Scouts from around the world to attend the Centenary World Scout Jamboree, through The Scout Association, and to raise funds for endangered species and habitats through WWF, the global conservation organisation.
The sponsorship money has not been collected yet, but hopefully it will be a nice amount for both WWF and towards enabling Scouts from around the world to attend the Centenary World Scout Jamboree.

John is seen here at the Lancing College organ with a painting of the South Downs, given to him by the choir.
Mark Gale writes "On this occasion, though, the honours went to the choir who expressly conveyed the devout mood of the music and were never thrown by the shifting dynamics of the piece".

The Scarecrow competition was great fun to judge and has brought out Ditchling's creativity and inventiveness.
Starting at 8.30am Stalls start trading, The Fair Proclamation is proclaimed, Crowning of the Fair King and Queen, Morris Dancing by Ditchling Morris and the visiting side, Spinning Jenny, Children's Fancy Dress competition, live music, Maypole Dancing and The legendary Jack and Jill Race all finishing at around midday (see programme for details).
One-third of profits from the stalls (or a fee from the commercial stalls), all donations and all sales of the programme go to fund the Ditchling Village Association.
