The Dithmarschen Cabbage Days (“Dithmarscher Kohltage”) are the largest fun event of the autumn on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein between Hamburg and the island of Sylt.
This classic autumn event is north Germany’s equivalent of the wine festivals predominant in the south of the country, and is held each year in the second half of September.
Two Cabbage Queens wearing the traditional Dithmarschen costume employ their charm and knowledge to guide visitors to this autumn entertainment through a varied programme.

  Dithmarschen - LoveToKnow 1911
'DITHMARSCHEN, or Ditmarsh (in the oldest form of the name Thiatmaresgaho, Dietmar's Gau), a territory between the Eider, the Elbe and the North Sea, forming the western part of the old duchy of Holstein, and now included in the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein.
The territory consists to the extent of one half of good pasture land, which is preserved from inroads of the sea by banks and dams, the other half being mostly waste.
A new division took place on Duke John's death in 1581, by which Frederick obtained South Ditmarsh, with its chief town of Meldorf, and Adolphus obtained North Ditmarsh, with its chief town of Heide; and this arrangement continued till 1773, when all the Gottorp possessions were incorporated with the Danish crown.

Dithmarschen was an autonomously administered state, a rare thing in 1500 A.D. Though it was nominally under the authority of the archbishop of Bremen, as far back as Karl der Große, who was crowned Franconian emperor at Aachen in 800 A.D., it was known that the Dithmarscher met in Meldorf annually for a governing Jahresversammlungen.
Dithmarschen persevered; but, when its council began organized agricultural commerce outside of the region, including to the Netherlands, it was apparently the last straw for the next fraternal duo to threaten the small republic.

The fact that both the Lower Saxony arms and those of Dithmarschen feature a white jumping horse on a red field and the fact that Dithmarschen is geographically close to Lower Saxony might give rise to the idea that the arms are related, but I have found nothing to support this idea.
The relation of the flags of Dithmarschen and Steinburg with the former Royal Danish arms [shown at Arnaud Bunel's Héraldique européenne website] is not surprising since these areas were in the possesion of the Danish king for a long time, and the royal Danish arms featured the arms of Holstein, Stormarn and Dithmarschen.

In the future when the historian sifts through the debris of our era, oversaturated with information, once the dross has been cast aside, more than a few of the things that remain will be bound in the covers of The Edwin Mellen Press.
Examines the existence of the Dithmarschen Republic (1227-1559), ruled by commoners who developed their own institutions, had their own written constitution, and successfully defended their political independence against the forces of Holstein, the combined powers of Schleswig and Holstein, and the united kingdom of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
Argues that the unique characteristics of Dithmarschen are not unique, and that many medieval peasant communities shared these characteristics - the clan system, a militia, and the desire to govern themselves - but had lacked the advantageous geographic and political situation enjoyed by Dithmarschen.
