Ditlev was made a scapegoat for his country's woes and it was partly through this and partly through political machinations that he became disillusioned with his country's future.
Ditlev travelled from here to Wellington and was successful in purchasing the land of his choice - sections 33, 34, 35, 36 and 39 on the shores of the Manawatu River at Karere.
Ditlev was to leave behind treasures that were as dear to his heart as any he had.

Ditlev rejste med sin familie i en alder af 56 år til New Zealand og bosatte sig først i byen Nelson på Sydøen og blev her vel modtaget af det pæne borgerskab, for man vidste godt han ikke var hvem som helst.

Når Monrad også ønskede at lade husmænd og landarbejdere få stemmeret, ja så var det, fordi han mente, at disse lavere lag i samfundet i stort omfang ville vælge konservativt på grund af deres afhængighed af eller personlige hengivenhed for godsejeren eller arbejdsgiveren.

Ditlev Gothard Monrad was a son of Otto Sommer Monrad, an attorney of the Danish Revenue Department, and came of a long line of theologians and jurists, a direct ancestor, Jacob Monrad, being among the first to introduce the reformed faith to Denmark.
Monrad was born in Copenhagen on 24 November 1811.
Though Monrad was only a passing figure on the New Zealand scene, this country owes much to him for his example of successful forest settlement and for his encouragement to thousands of his countrymen to emigrate here and undertake the same task.

The Monrads were quickly joined by other settlers at Karere as soon as land was available for purchase: Matthew Hamilton, David and George McEwen, David Rowland, James Sly, Peter Stewart and David Watson.
It was Bishop Monrad’s son Johannes who imported from Denmark the first centrifugal cream separator seen in the Manawatu.

The New Zealand government had been impressed with the Danish men who came to their country with Bishop Monrad, when he and his family immigrated to New Zealand.
The New Zealand government also requested that Bishop Monrad to return to Denmark, to encourage other Danish people to leave Denmark, and to move to New Zealand.
