A ditloid is a type of word puzzle, in which a phrase or quote must be deduced from the numbers and abbreviated letters in the clue.
Ditloids puzzles are great for organizational development and team building exercises, team building games and quizzes of all sorts, because they combine maths, logic, lateral thinking and general knowledge.
Any phrase can be used to form a Ditloid, however a good puzzle should have the same attributes as a good crossword clue: once the answer is discovered the solver should be certain that it is right, and if not discovered the solver should look at the answer and think "I should have got that".

A Ditloid is a short phrase containing at least one number in which the non-trivial words have been replaced by their initial letters.
Any phrase can be used to form a Ditloid, however a good puzzle should have the same attributes as a good crossword clue: once the answer is discovered the solver should be certain that it is right, and if not discovered the solver should look at the answer and think "I should have got that".

This type of puzzle was very popular in a very popular American magazine called GAMES (which I think is no longer in publication - can any American readers confirm this?).
This is derived from 1 DITLOID (= 1 day in the life of Ivan Denisovich).
It would be handy if this name caught on, but I don't think it is doing so.
