languagehat.com: Comment on CANTONESE LOSING OUT IN L.A.
The disappearance of Cantonese would be a terrible tragedy, but I suspect that it will always be vibrant thanks to its population base in Hong Kong and Guangdong, not to mention the prolific Cantonese film industry.
A Cantonese coworker once told me that her non-Cantonese Chinese husband could read the news section of San Francisco Chinese newspapers but not the entertainment section, as the entertainment section was written in colloquial Cantonese.
The Hokkien version of "diu nei lo mo" I understand to be "kan ni na bu cao cibai." It occurs a lot in the Singaporean feature film "15." While I found the film unpleasant generally, it is of linguistic interest for its use of Hokkien vulgarisms.

Kung Fu Magazine Forums - Mandarin or Cantonese (sp?)
I am really interested in learning cantonese - but as Coach Ross said it is hard to fing a text book or courses to learn it - especially in my country where there is very small Chinese population and there are only few courses avaliable - mainly mandarin.
The tonality of Cantonese is harder to learn, however I've found that overall their consonants are much easier to pronounce.
I am not familiar with the Cantonese transcription methods so I can't comment on their level of completeness or accuracy but AFAIK there is no single accepted method.

Spoken colloquial Cantonese is no where close to Standard grammar and without education in Standard grammar (Standard grammar is utilized by every dialect, but is not necessarily utilized in colloquial speech), one can begin to see why learning Mandairn is so difficult for ABCs.
Cantonese, a sharp, cackling dialect full of slang and exaggerated expressions, was never the dominant language of China.
But many Cantonese speakers are finding out now that they have to learn Mandarin or risk being left behind in business or even within their families.

Hong Kong has, in the past few decades, developed a written form of Cantonese used in some novels, periodicals and comics, but this cannot be said of Hokkien or Teochew.
Many uniquely Cantonese words which traditionally have not had any Chinese characters assigned to represent them have been expressed in Hong Kong by the addition of the 口 (mouth) radical to the left side of a phoneme.

Some people, however, are not aware that the variations, which they use quite casually, are related to the profane diu.
On a related note, the character 屌 (diǎo), which is equivalent to the English slang term "dick" in Mandarin Chinese, is also commonly used by young people in Taiwan to mean "cool".
The five profanities are said to be Diu, Gau (𨳊(門九) meaning penis), Nen (ð¨¶(門能)™ meaning also penis), Tsat (ð¨³(門七) meaning again penis), Hai (閪(門西) meaning vulva), each of the five coined characters has "door" (門) as its semantic element, which might symbolize the vulva, as the "door" to the female genitalia.

Written cantonese (the pure form) is similar to mandarin, so if someone was raised speaking mandarin, they would probably have a better chance understanding a song than some chinko that was raised speaking cantonese!

As the republicans were based in Guangzhou (a Cantonese speaking area), Chiang Kai-shek became known by Westerners under the Cantonese romanization of his courtesy name, while the family name as known in English seems to be the Mandarin pronunciation of his Chinese family name, transliterated in Wade-Giles).
