Generally, ordinary Divehis mostly know only that their islands were settled from Sri Lanka, that before Islam they were Buddhist, and that their language suggests the same origin.
The medieval settlements from Sri Lanka were strongest in the southern islands, and this gave rise to the Divehi language, Buddhism, and the ideals of kinship.
This supports the interpretation of the Sinhala chronicles that the ancestors of the Sinhalas, and therefore of the Divehis, came from western India, from Gujarat by sea, and not from Bengal.

 MALDIVES
The language spoken in the Maldives is Divehi, belonging to the group of Indo-Aryan languages, but having many affinities with the Dravidian languages of the geographical area in which the country lies.
Besides the main form of Divehi, known as Malé Bas, this language has three markedly different variants which are located in the second group, in the South.
For this reason, in Divehi families, parents were happy to have daughters because they would bring boys into their home, whereas sons would ‘bring fish to someone else’s house’, meaning that even during courtship, their interests would already be in the household of their forthcoming wife.

WWW Virtual Library: The roots of Sinhala
The term by which the Maldivians denote their language, 'Divehi Bas' literally means 'Language of the Islands' and has developed from the Old Sinhala diva - island' and basa - 'language', divehi being the genitive form of diva.
Divehi shares with Sinhala, the simplification of conjunct consonants, the shortening of long vowels, the dropping of nasals and the de-aspiration of the aspirated consonents of Old-and Middle-Indo-Aryan represented by Sanskrit and Prakrit respectively.
Another significant change is that of retroflex t to the peculiar Divehi sound sh which is uttered by placing the tip of the tongue in the highest part of the palate and letting the breath escape sideways between the teeth.

Divehi is written right-to-left, with vowels written as marks over or under the consonants.
Divehi wisely uses a placeholder here: a letter that stands for the lack of a preceding consonant.
The fact that Divehi is written "backwards" is just a matter for display on the screen; Unicode doesn't make an issue of this, and encodes things "in logical order", as it's called.

The Contacts Index bar for the Syriac and for the Divehi (Thaana) fonts do not work in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 if you are running a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer or a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer.
This problem occurs because both the Syriac and the Divehi (Thaana) fonts were released after Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Windows XP.
Both the Divehi (Thaana) and the Syriac (Thaana) fonts are new for Windows XP and for Windows 2000 Server.

Maldives Royal Family Official Website: Bastardisation of Divehi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In a recent Divehi language series of articles in a Maldive web site, someone who described himself as a curator of a mosque lamented what he considered a slight on the Arabic language.
The writer's gripe was about Mullah Ibrahim using a Divehi word in an Arabic expression addressed to Arabs.
The author was obviously upset at the apparent bastardisation of the Arabic language by Mullah Ibrahim and yet in the same series of articles he bastardised his own Divehi language with Arabic.
