Surfbirds News: UK divers buck Europe’s tumbling trend
Both have declined in Europe overall and the fl-throated diver was last week made a conservation priority by the UK government because of the declines elsewhere.
Divers are celebrated in American culture and should be similarly lauded and applauded here.
The red-throated diver is steeped in mythology and is known as the rain goose in its strongholds of Orkney and Shetland.

Great Northern Diver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The bird is whimsical on takeoff and landing, and clumsy on the land due to the position of the legs at the rear of the body, ideal for diving but not well-suited for walking.
Birds land on water skimming along on their bellies to slow down rather than their feet, as these are set too far back.
This diver is well-known in Canada, appearing on the "loonie" coin and $20 bill, and is the provincial bird of Ontario.

Minnesota State Bird - Great Northern Diver - Loon - Gavia Immer
The bird commonly detects the signal at once, and, probably imagining the object thus exhibited to be one of its own species, gradually advances, emitting its love-notes, which resemble a coarse laugh, as it proceeds.
This bird, with a pink-coloured iris, like albinos, appeared to suffer from the glare of broad day-light, and was inclined to hide from its effects, but became very active towards the dusk of the evening.
This bird was a most expert and indefatigable diver, and remained down sometimes for several minutes, often swimming under water, and as it were flying with the velocity of an arrow in the air.

 The Red-throated Diver
The Red-throated Diver is found, in tolerable abundance, on the sea-coast of the United States during autumn, winter, and early spring, from Maryland to the extremities of Maine.
The Divers, moreover, live on the sea during the greater part of the year, and resort to ponds, lakes, or the borders of rivers to breed; whilst the Grebes spend most of their time on inland lakes, marshes, and streams.
So averse from moving are the old birds when sitting on their eggs, that they will not bestir themselves until in imminent danger, on which, however, they scramble to the water, dive, and, on emerging, immediately rise on wing without tittering any note.

 Black-throated Diver
One of the most remarkable circumstances relative to this beautiful bird, which is intermediate between the Red-throated Diver and the Loon, is the extraordinary extent to which the wanderings of the young are carried in autumn and winter.
It breeds in the remote regions of the north, from which many of the old birds, it would seem, do not remove far, while the young, as soon as they are able to travel, take to wing and disperse, spreading not only over the greater part of the United States, but beyond their south-western limits.
For many years I knew the young of this bird only by the name "Imber Diver," applied by BEWICK to that of another species, and now have pleasure in looking upon a drawing of mine, made about thirty years ago, with that appellation attached to it.

DESCENT was written in 2003 by Robert Gwalchmai for divers and those non-divers who have always wondered what it would be like to venture into Neptune’s mysterious realm.
As most divers will agree, diving is the closest humans will ever come to flying unassisted, only it is done beneath the waves instead of above the ground.
For divers, it should all sound surprisingly familiar; for those who have yet to try this exciting experience, here is a glimpse of what awaits you underwater.
