  DLM as a Social Organization
DLM was founded in India in the 1930s by the father of the present leader, who became the Satguru, or Perfect Master, at the age of eight, 1966 when his father died.
The actual formal organization of DLM was set up in Britain in 1971 and it was registered as a charity with Mata Ji acting as regent for her son, Maharaj Ji, who was still a minor, and with half English and half Indian premies on the board of directors.
This paper has attempted to show that the Divine Light Mission as a social organization is a product of various constraints which stem from the degree of competence of the leader, the social composition of the followers, the beliefs and practices of the devotees and the cultural context within which the mission functions.

Prem Rawat Critique - Ron Geaves
Although the Officers of the US DLM, either at Rawat's instigation, or from their own initiative, may have operated as though they had international authority, the national Divine Light Missions in the UK, Australia, India etc. were entirely autonomous, whilst the US DLM had no brief to operate internationally.
The re-ashramisation that occurred under the aegis of the national Divine Light Missions between 1977 and 1983 certainly appears to have been an intended and strategic development, what is not clear is what the motivation behind the reversal of laissez fair acceptance of ashram decline was.
The UK Divine Light Mission was created as Trust with religious purpose under UK Charity Law, the Trustees and Officers of the Trust being required to act entirely independently and in the interest only of the Trust as defined by its objectives.

Rawat Rawat (aka Maharaji), head of a Cult named Elan Vital (previously Divine Light Mission)?
In the early days of the western Divine Light Mission the cult label was largely a response by a sceptical media and distressed family members toward an individual and organization that were quite literally, foreign to them.
In comparison to the Divine Light Mission of the 1970s, the Elan Vital (and its associated organizations) of today lacks hysterical devotion and is largely devoid of religious symbolism; Prem Rawat is presented as an inspirational speaker not a divine personage and the organization is presented as philanthropic and educational, not iconoclastic and proselytising.
As leader of Elan Vital, Prem Rawat is self-appointed and he has a claim to have a special mission in life, he answers to no higher authority, such as an oversight board and is the sole interpreter of doctrine and policy and these are subject to change frequently and whimsically by Prem Rawat.
