The first Commonwealth Games (then called the British Empire Games) were held in 1930, in Ontario, Canada, and featured just six sports: athletics, boxing, lawn bowls, rowing, swimming/diving and wrestling.
In March 2006, elite athletes from the 71 nations of the Commonwealth will gather in Melbourne for the 18th Commonwealth Games.
In 2006 the program includes 16 sports played across 24 disciplines and, two new sports will be included in the program: basketball and synchronised diving.
