Scaup are one diving duck species that prefers to dine on small crustaceans in nearshore and inshore areas.
Diving ducks, or divers, derive their name from their primary method of feeding, which is diving below the surface of the water.

Chesapeake Bay Journal: Fowl Weather Friends - January/February 2003
Ducks in the Chesapeake region are divided into dabbling ducks, diving duck and sea ducks.
The wood duck, which shares many of the characteristics of dabbling ducks, is classified as a “perching duck” because of its ability to perch in trees.
A diving duck’s large feet and short legs are near the rear of its body and are used to propel the bird underwater in search of SAV or aquatic invertebrates.

DNR Releases 2003 Mid-Winter Waterfowl Survey Results
Diving duck estimates declined from 310,000 in 2002 to 169,900 in 2003.
The drop in diving duck estimates was attributed to significant decreases in ruddy ducks (42,700 this winter compared to 79,200 in 2002) and scaup (66,600 in 2003 compared to the record 163,400 counted in last winter).
Other diving duck species’ estimates in 2002 were lower compared to 2002, including redheads (5,100), buffleheads (13,100), ring-necked ducks (300) and American goldeneyes (2,100).

A diving duck has shorter legs, located farther back on the body, and larger feet distinguished by a big hind toe with a pronounced flap or lobe.
The ring-necked duck, the scaup, and the lesser scaup or little bluebill, are diving ducks esteemed as game birds but the redhead and the canvasback, being essentially vegetarians, are most highly regarded by epicures.
The redhead was once the commonest of all diving ducks but unfortunately, due to excessive hunting and drainage of the nesting areas, they and the canvasback have become scarce.

Red Fox Predation on Breeding Ducks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Seventy-six percent of the dabbling ducks and 40% of the diving ducks were hens.
The sex composition of dabbling ducks found at dens in North Dakota and South Dakota revealed that although fox predation was hen selective in all species, there were important differences among areas and species (Table 5).
The effect of nesting chronology on sex compositions of ducks taken by foxes is also evident in comparisons of percentage of hens in early and late season samples of the 5 principal dabbling duck species found at dens in our 3-county intensive study area (Table 6).

duck diving is the way that a surfer dives under an oncoming wave as he / she is paddling out to the line up.
Ducking under the wave ensures that all the progress made by paddling out is not lost by being washed backwards by the wave.
If you have duck dived correctly you should be in a position to immediately start paddling again.

Harvesting the River: Harvesting: Waterfowl: Diving Ducks -- Illinois State Museum
Diving ducks are found in the larger, deeper lakes and rivers, where they can dive deeply for food and to escape danger, and where they have running room to launch their flight.
Ring-necked, lesser scaups, canvasback, and redhead ducks dove to the bottom of lakes to gather small snails and fingernail clams, and also freshwater plants and their seeds.
During the past three decades, food supplies for diving ducks have nearly disappeared, and redhead ducks have largely abandoned backwater lakes along the Illinois.

Diving ducks are considered good indicators of the Chesapeake's water quality because they not only use surface habitat, but dive to feed on bottom dwelling plants or animals.
Chesapeake Bay diving duck species include canvasbacks, redheads, scaup, ring-necked ducks, common goldeneye, bufflehead and ruddy ducks.
It is not known why the redheads did not also switch their diet to include clams.Other diving ducks have always depended on clams and other benthic invertebrates for food.

Since many of them have short tails, their huge, paddle feet may be used as rudders in flight, and are often visible on flying birds.
Since their wings are smaller in proportion to the size and weight of their bodies, they have a more rapid wingbeat than puddle ducks.

Wetlands - Volume 20, Number 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of survey timing on diving duck and duck brood abundance indices in eastern South Dakota.
Findings indicate that timing of aerial breeding surveys occurred too early in eastern South Dakota to accurately reflect diving duck population status because birds had not yet settled into breeding habitats and aerial production surveys did not coincide with peak duck brood abundance.
Diving duck abundance from aerial surveys conducted during 10-17 May were higher than indices from ground surveys conducted 2 weeks later because lesser scaup (Aythya affinis), ring-necked duck (Aythya collaris), and bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) were still migrating through eastern South Dakota.

 NYSOA - Waterfowl Count 2001
In general, counts of geese were down from a year ago, counts of most dabbling ducks were similar between years, and counts of most diving duck species increased dramatically (Table 2).
The unusually high counts of diving ducks in New York were not observed throughout the Atlantic Flyway, suggesting that high FWC counts were due in part to short-term distributional shifts rather than population increases.
Highlights of regional reports included unprecedented numbers of Canvasback, Greater Scaup, Long-tailed Duck and Red-breasted Mergansers on the Niagara River and Lake Erie near Buffalo (Region 1), Barrow's Goldeneye on the Oneida River (Region 5) and on Long Island Sound near Oak Neck (Region 10), and two Harlequin Ducks near Staten Island (Region 10).
