Doomed plane 'diving really fast' - National - smh.com.au
The pilot of a light plane had little chance to escape as it nosedived into the water off a Northern NSW beach yesterday, a witness to the crash says.
There was a strong rip in the surf at the crash site and the recovery of the body from near the plane indicated the pilot had not jumped, Mr Lambert said.
The plane had taken off from Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta and it was believed the pilot had reported engine problems, Mr Walsh said.

Patent 5467728: Retractable bow diving plane for a submarine
A retractable bow diving plane is provided which can be rotated when fully xtended or retracted or when at any position in between, and which allows for independent operation of the port and starboard bow diving planes.
The aft plane roller assembly 82 and the forward plane roller assembly 84 are mounted on the rotor bearing 68 at the forward and aft ends of the slot in the rotor bearing 68.
The aft plane roller assembly 82 and forward plane roller assembly 84 maintain the proper fore/aft alignment of the bow plane 4 under the force of hydrodynamic loads (primarily drag) on the bow plane 4.

Patent 4282672: Diving plane for fishing
A diving apparatus is placed in serial connection with the end of a fishing line, approximate to the trailing and submerged end of the line as the line is used in trolling.
An object of this invention is to disclose an improved mechanism for topside release of a diving plane from a diving mode.
The diving forces on the platform are all transmitted through member 79 and bar 40 to enable the line to dive to the predetermined depth.

The Fleet Type Submarine - Chapter 14
The horizontal athwartship for the stern diving planes is keyed to a tiller which is operated through an angle of 54 degrees by a connecting rod, cylinder, and piston arrangement located in the after torpedo room under the non-watertight walking flat.
A mechanical plane angle indicator is provided in the forward torpedo room and two plane angle indicators in the after torpedo room, one on the after bulkhead and one at the tilting cylinder beneath the platform deck.
The stop bar is released by moving the planes in the dive direction until the indicator (in the control room) reads at least 5 degrees dive, disengaging the pin from the stop bar and allowing the bar to drop clear of the path of extension rod.

 Plane Crash 09-01-2000
Hamilton said the plane was heading for Daytona Beach, Fla., and had made a stop at Martinsburg, W.Va. At some point, the pilot changed the flight plan to land at Columbia, S.C. Becky Gordon, a house mother at a fraternity house, was in the parking lot when she saw the plane diving toward her.
Then she noticed a wing of the plane was missing and saw the aircraft explode in midair.
Gambino remained in the plane as it smashed into the sidewalk and a stone wall 78 yards from where the passenger hit.

Submarine Hydraulic Systems - Chapter 5
One immediate difference to be seen between steering and diving plane controls is that the diving plane controls are all located on the front of a single panel; the various valves and units themselves are mounted behind the panel.
The diving planes (11) are connected to the outboard end of the connecting rod by a ball-and-socket joint (12) which permits sufficient lateral rotation to allow for tilting at least 25 degrees in either direction.
The bow planes are assumed to be between zero tilt and 15 degrees' dive, and the cam on the tiller hub (1) is therefore at its highest point under the lever arm when at zero tilt, holding the spool valve of the tilting interlock (2) in the OPEN position.

Just be sure that each adjustment is bringing you closer to the equilibrium point, that is the point at which the plane flies level.

By the time he reached the scene he saw the plane turned over, with a wing missing and a section of the fuselage torn off.

 Focke Wulf Fw 190D-9
Once this plane levels off, it's true escape skills start to shine, for under 10,000ft, this plane will retain E better than any other warbirds plane, and after 30 seconds after leveling off at 1,000ft it will be racing a minimum of 10mph faster than the best competitive plane.
Thus once this plane points it's nose at the ground, unless the competition has a good snapshot, is right on the Dora's rear, anticipating his dive, or gets real lucky, the Dora is as good as gone.
Even with planes that can keep pace with the Dora in the diving part of the escape, trying to shoot a plane while diving, especially if the other plane is diving, presenting a direct 6 shot, and is rolling, is a serious test of gunnery skill.

Submarine Electrical Systems - Chapter 11
The mechanical operating mechanism between the transmitters and the diving planes should be examined periodically to see that proper alignment and free movement without backlash are maintained.
Motion of the diving planes moves the mechanical transmitters across a number of contacts, thus closing the circuits to the lamps mounted on a panel in the control room.
An intermediate contact maker operated from the hydraulic interlock shaft of the rigging mechanism makes a series of intermittent contacts while the planes are rigging in or out and flashes an indicating light at the diving station to indicate that the planes are moving in or out.

The crabs were wired to electrodes designed to measure activity in a particular part of their brains associated with their sense of balance.

Trolling with a diving plane or canonball sinker: With your boat moving at 2-4 knots (2-5 miles per hour), lower the terminal tackle into the water, check for lure action, then let out about 50-100 feet of line (about 25-40 pulls of line).
The singing drag will signal a bite and the pull of the salmon will drop the weight (canonball) or open the diving plane, allowing the fish to rise up and fight.
For trolling with a diving plane or canonball rig, use a 6 foot or so, medium to medium heavy boat rod with roller tip and a saltwater trolling or casting reel holding 300 yards of 25 lb test monofilament line.

I was thinking about trying to get the more valuable stuff like my reg in a lockable hard suitecase but recently on some international business trips I have taken I couldn't lock my bags anyway (they are not entirely consistent with this rule) so I am not sure it would really add any security anyway.
While I haven't done research about this, here's a new (to me, anyway) travel lock that the claim is TSA can open if they want to inspect your baggage after it's checked.
For air travel, I think consensus is to carry onto the plane your reg and mask.
