Diving cylinder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Diving cylinders are typically filled in the range of 186 to 300 bar (2700 to 4300 psi, or 18.6 to 30.0 MPa) and have a volume of 1.5 to 18 litres or a gas carrying capacity of 850 to 3600 litres (30 to 120 ft³).
Diving cylinders until the 1970s, before pressure gauges on regulators came into common use, often used a mechanical reserve mechanism to indicate to the diver that the cylinder was nearly empty.
In recreational diving for example, it is recommended that the diver plans to surface with a reserve remaining in the cylinder of 500 psi, 50 bar or 25% of the initial capacity, depending of the teaching of the diver training organisation.

CONK! Encyclopedia: Buoyancy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Typically, the weight of the displaced fluid is directly proportional to the volume of the displaced fluid (Specifically if the surrounding fluid is of uniform density.) Thus, among objects with equal masses, the one with greater volume has greater buoyancy.
If the weight of an object is less than the weight of the fluid that the object would displace if it was fully submerged, then the object is less dense than the fluid and it floats at a level so it displaces the same weight of fluid as the weight of the object.
One can compare the situation to a scale, where the weight on one side is given by the object, and the weight on the other side by the displaced fluid element.

 Buoyancy Control Systems
Regardless of whether you are diving at 30 feet on a coral reef, 130 feet in a wreck or at 300 feet in a cave, the key elements to diving are the same.
Having an enjoyable dive remains the goal while good buoyancy, proper trim, suitable weighting, efficient propulsion and integrated life support are the fundamental skills that support safe and enjoyable diving.
The Halcyon MC System is designed to significantly reduce the effort required to move through the water not only by establishing proper trim, but also by reducing drag on the diver.

Scuba diving   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
As the concentration of gases increases with the depth of the dive and some gases are toxic at high concentrations, the design of breathing gas mixes depends on the depth of the dive.
Diving weighting systems, diving suits and buoyancy compensators all contribute to the diver's buoyancy.
Diving suits also help prevent the diver's skin being damaged by rough or sharp underwater objects and marine animals.

 Deep Diving
With the advent of dive computers and accessibility to increasingly sophisticated dive equipment this is a depth range where the planning does not always match the standard necessary to meet the demands of the dive.
Diving in the 20-30 metre depth range is fairly safe under “normal” conditions but if the dive lasts for long periods of time the diver will come very near, or cross, the No-Stage-Decompression limit for that depth.
The buddy system is useful for monitoring each other for signs of narcosis and stress; and to help if a diver becomes entangled, but the ability of a buddy to do all you would want and expect on a shallow dive decreases as the task loading increases at depth.

 Scubaventures: Proper Dive Weighting
Sure the weight belt is OK for many people, but there are others who have to wear more weight than others or who have bodies that have all the "padding" in the wrong places and who find that weight belts are extremely uncomfortable.
The solution was to remove weight from the BCD pouches and put it on a weight belt with the weight around behind him (to counterbalance the weight in the front of the BCD).
A rather creative friend of mine needed some light ankle weights trim her position and got some homemade ones from bicycle innertubes, tire balancing weights, a couple of small plastic clips like the ones on BCD chest straps and a couple of cable tie wraps.

 River Diving Equipment
River diving, as with all specialty environments, requires equipment tailored for the unique characteristics of the region in which the diver has chosen to work or play.
Whenever possible, dive teams should be an even number so that true buddy teams are utilized In coroner inquests, the Ontario Underwater Council has repeatedly pointed out that diving as a threesome was a proximate cause of death.

Most modern open-circuit scuba sets have a diving regulator consisting of a first stage pressure reducing valve that is sealed over the diving cylinder’s output valve, and the second stage “demand valve” at the mouthpiece, with a thin pressure hose linking the two stages.
The duration of an open-circuit dive depends on factors such as the capacity (volume of gas) in the diving cylinder, the depth of the dive and the breathing rate of the diver.
In technical diving, the diver may carry different equipment for different phases of the dive; some breathing gas mixes may only be used at depth, such as trimix and others, such as pure oxygen, which only may be used for decompression in shallow water.

WELCOME TO IATD making technical diving simple again.
Diving helments are mostly used with surface supplied diving: the helmet acts as a firm anchor point on the diver for the umbilical supplying the breathing gas.
Traditionally, weight belts or weight systems are worn with the weights on or close to the waist and are arranged with a quick release mechanism to allow them to be jettisoned to provide extra buoyancy in an emergency.
Non-ditchable weight : in addition to the weight that can be dropped ('ditched'), some divers add additional fixed weights to their gear, both to decrease the weight placed on the belt and to shift the diver's center of mass to minimize the tendency of the gear to hold the diver in one orientation.

 Weights and weighting systems
Because of the large amount of weight worn by cold water divers, concentrating it in one place would mean that in the event of requiring the ditching of your weight system would result in a dramatic change in buoyancy that is likely to result in uncontrolled buoyant ascents leading to injury.
The second benefit is that weight integration usually concentrates weight in two locations on the BCD allowing 50% of the weight to be deployed at a time (some exceptions like newer Zeagle BCD which use a single rip cord to deploy the weight leading to the loss of 100% of the weight).
Keep in mind that a diver should not place the majority of the weight in a hard pack as this source of weight cannot be deployed in the event that positive buoyancy is required leading to a potentially dangerous situation.

The buoyancy is equal to the weight of the displaced fluid.
If the weight of an object is less than that of the fluid that the object would displace if it was fully submerged, then the object is less dense than the fluid and it floats at such a level that the weight of the object is equal to the weight of the displaced fluid.

 Practical Buoyancy Control
Archimedes Principle states that this upward force is equal in magnitude to the weight of the water displaced by the submerged object.
Recreational diving should not be done without the ability to rapidly and completely remove the weight system.
Rather than discarding weight (as a balloonist would do to move upward), divers find it convenient (since multiple up and down movements are common on a dive) to increase buoyancy by adding air to the B.C. We face our buddy during descent because this helps maintain contact (especially in limited visibility water).

So now, assuming you were correctly weighted before, you are negative by the total weight of the gas you are carrying, say 6.6Kg in the twinset and 1.9Kgs in each of your stages, plus the lift your drysuit provided and which you just lost.

The Halcyon Multifunction Compensator System (MC System) is the recreational and technical solution to what other manufacturers call a Buoyancy Compensation Device.  The Halcyon MC System enables the diver to achieve good buoyancy, proper trim and weighting.  It lends itself to efficient propulsion while providing integrated life support for safe and enjoyable diving.
It is ideal for diving in tropical to temperate waters where moderate exposure protection and neutrally buoyant tanks are commonly used.
The Stainless backplate provides 2.5 kilos/6 pounds of non ditchable weight distributed evenly across the divers back, which allows for a better trim profile.  For divers who need less weight or for diving in the tropics, the Aluminum 1 kilo/2.2 pounds backplate is also available.

In the early seventies the buoyant aluminum tank was promoted as an "advance in safety," in that it would not "corrode, rust and break through." Unfortunately, empty buoyant cylinders act essentially as an outrigger on the back of the diver, positioning the nose and mouth of the unconscious or obtunded diver under the water.
