 Divinyls - Nostalgia Central
Led by provocative singer Christina Amphlett, whose songwriting with guitarist Mark McEntee is the basis of the band, Divinyls have recorded a wealth of excellent material, from commercial hard pop and driving arena-rock to alluring ballads.
As the bands focal point, Amphlett - who is the cousin of 60s Australian "Queen of the surf", Little Pattie (real name Patricia Amphlett) - has strutted her stuff the world over, astounding and bewildering audiences with her displays of school uniform-clad bump'n'grind burlesque, unrestrained sexuality and animal grace.
Divinyls tracks subsequently started to appear in the soundtracks to US movies and TV shows (including Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and the band signed with BMG/RCA in 1996.

In 1991, Australia's Divinyls generated some controversy in the U.S. when lead singer Chrissie Amphlett sang about female masturbation on "I Touch Myself." Far from explicit, the PG-rated hit shouldn't have come as such a shock to American ears.
Hardcore Divinyls enthusiasts will find the eerie "Love School" and infectious offerings like "Make Out Alright," "Bless My Soul (It's Rock-N-Roll)," and "I Touch Myself" to be well worth acquiring.
Desperate would be a better introduction to the Divinyls, but this is a release with many more strengths than weaknesses.

Yet another sparkling gem, this self-titled album FINALLY brought the DiVinyls a portion of the acclaim and success in North America that all their albums should have received worldwide.
Some have complained that the sound of this album is different from previous albums, ignoring the fact that "What A Life" was a bigger departure from "Desperate" than this is from "Temperamental" and that all the DiVinyls albums have a different sound from each other.
First of all, the diVinyls NEVER sold out anything, and anybody who knows anything about all the ridiculous troubles they've had with various record labels for not going along with the trends du jour knows this.

The Divinyls had several lineups over the years, but the two constants were Christina “Chrissie” Amphlett on vocals, and Mark McEntee on guitar.
Still, there are more than enough good songs here that highlight what a powerful band Divinyls were, and how fondly remembered they are by those that managed to catch a live show.
