The division was originally an organizational structure under the corps to assist in command and control of various regiments and brigades.
Usually the direct organization of the division consists of one to four brigades or regiments of the combat arm of the division along with a brigade or regiment of combat support (usually artillery) and a number of direct-reporting battalions for various specialized support tasks (often reconnaissance and combat engineers).
The first division sized formation raised by the Canadian military was the First Contingent of the Canadian Expeditionary Force; raised in 1914, it was renamed the Canadian Division in early 1915 when it took to the field, and became the First Canadian Division when a Second Canadian Division took to the field later that year.

 U.S. 1st Cavalry Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the study did not lead to a general reorganization of the cavalry division, the wartime cavalry regiment was restructured, effective 1 December 1938, to consist of a headquarters and headquarters troop, machine gun and special weapons troops, and three squadrons of three rifle troops each.
The 1st Cavalry Division remained in the line until it was relieved by the 45th Infantry Division from the United States Army National Guard in January 1952.
The division was among the American units that crossed the border into Cambodia, increasing the extent of the ground war quite considerably.

The infantry divisions in the American Expeditionary Forces contained 260 machine guns, 36 of which were used as antiaircraft weapons within the division field artillery brigade.
Assigned to each of the two infantry brigades within the division was one machine gun battalion, commanded by a major, and composed of four machine gun companies; these companies were identical in organization to the regimental machine gun companies.
Machine gun companies that were attached to infantry battalions designated as division or brigade reserve for a particular mission were usually placed under direct command of their respective brigade commanders, to fill gaps of fire and to protect the brigade flanks.

With this organization, the Division Commander (or whatever the Unit of Employment will end up being called) will be able to weight his main effort with additional artillery and dedicated assets to the counter fire battle.
This organization looks to be a bit weak to this observer, as it does not provide the Division Commander with a dedicated set of eyes and ears in the form of the divisional Cavalry squadron.
Not sure about the new organization but in an armored cav regiment there are, or at least when I was in there were 4 squadrons.The ACR was self contained and had more firepower than a light division.
