		In March 1938 the division took part in the occupation of Austria and was later stationed near Vienna.
		In September 1939 the division took part in the Polish Campaign during which time it was attached to the XIX (mot) Armeekorps.
		On 1 November 1939 the I/Infanterie-Regiment 33 (mot) was transferred to the division from the 13.Infanterie-Division(mot) and on 1 April 1940 it was renamed the III/Schützen-Regiment 3.

		The tracked elements of the division were loaded for sea transport in the Greek port of Patras to Tarent in the south of Italy.
		The division continued to see action in the East as a part of Armeegruppe Mitte fighting in the massive defensive battles of 1942 including Rzhev, the Kursk Summer Offensive in July, 1943, and the defensive battles along the Dnieper River later.
		The Division was nearly destroyed in France in 1944, and was reformed along with portions of the 352.Infantry-Division.
