The division was created in 1949 and included the whole of the city of Canberra and surrounding rural areas.

However, since Australia's signature of the Antarctic Treaty, territorial claims are effectively suspended, and the Australian Antarctic Division administers the area, primarily by supporting various research projects.

 NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION COUNCIL (NORTHERN TERRITORY) ACT
The Commonwealth, the States, the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory and the Australian Local Government Association have entered into an Agreement known as the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Environment setting out certain responsibilities of each party in relation to the environment.
It is the intention of the Legislative Assembly that the Territory will, in compliance with its obligations under the Agreement, implement, by such laws and other arrangements as are necessary, each national environment protection measure in respect of activities that are subject to Territory law (including activities of the Territory and its instrumentalities).
(1) The Minister of the Territory who is a member of the Council is, after each reporting year of the Council, to prepare a report on the implementation of national environment protection measures during that year by the Territory and the effectiveness of those measures.

A redistribution of federal electoral boundaries commenced in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in November 2004.
A redistribution is a redrawing of electoral boundaries.
The Redistribution Committee’s report along with maps showing the proposed boundaries and names of divisions will be exhibited at the Office of the Senior Divisional Returning Officer for the ACT, and will be available for perusal at AEC Head Offices in each State and the Northern Territory and at the AEC Central Office in Canberra.
