Parliament of Australia: House of Representatives:
The electorate of Bennelong is an urban electorate within the city of Sydney.
Above all, I think it is necessary, when framing policies for the cities or the metropolitan areas, to take account of the fact that it is necessary at all times to preserve a sense of local identity, a sense of community and a sense of belonging to one's own particular part of the world.
For example, their reaction in many parts of the electorate to the proposals put forward by a committee called the Barnett Committee earlier this year for the amalgamation of local councils was testimony to a desire to preserve a local identity.

In 1790, Bennelong asked the Governor to build him a hut on what became known as Bennelong Point, now the site of the Sydney Opera House.
This site is still named for him, as is the Division of Bennelong seat in the Federal parliament.

simon jackman’s blog » John Howard, Bennelong, and Malcolm Mackerras   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Malcolm Mackerras has been on this one for a while: that Bennelong is increasingly a marginal seat and if it looks sufficiently dodgy, Howard will resign, rather than risk the ignominy of losing his seat.
Bennelong becoming a very marginal Liberal seat would create an interesting strategic dilemma for Howard and the Lib campaign.
There is also a plausible scenario in which the redistribution sees Bennelong shift in a more Liberal direction: say, if it were to shift eastwards, over the “natural” boundary of the Lane Cove into what is currently in the division of Bradfield.

But it is now clear the arrangement was more than Mr Howard privately helping out his son's struggling business enterprise - the contract with the NSW division of the party applies to a number of other MPs.
When it was put to the director of business development for Net Harbour, Paul Thornewell, that the company also was doing work for Mr Abbott, Dr Nelson and Mr Cameron, he said they could be among "a number" of other clients.

The interesting thing will be the status of Bennelong after the NSW redistribution, the results of which will be known in late 2006.
If you read the AEC division profiles, Bennelong with a margin of 4.2% is already classified as marginal.
It will be argued that if his policies are supported by the Australian people then why doesn’t he have the guts to stick with his marginal seat and win a difficult electorate for the government.

Spell Out Your Alternative, Howard Tells NSW Liberals [December 8, 2001]
I hope it’s not a reflection on the sitting members in Bennelong and North Sydney but I do know this, that it represents a wonderful illustration of the outward expansion of the Liberal Party.
And what the election, particularly here in New South Wales, was about was the outward expansion of the Liberal Party into areas that were previously not regarded as ones where we could be successful.
If you want to win the next state election, put aside for good the divisions that have wracked this party and this division too much too often and for too long over recent years.

Back in 2002, some members of the BCA decided that it was about time that the Association, made up of the chief executives of Australia's top 100 companies, reverse its position on Kyoto and urge the government to ratify it.
Because, you see, to quote the Herald, Bennelong was "the Aborigine adopted by the first white settlers.” In other words, he was a ‘jacky jacky’.

For example, the electoral division of Bennelong (whose representative is the Hon John Howard – Prime Minister) would feel better represented than an electorate whose representative was, for example, an opposition backbencher, who would have little role in Parliament.
