Division of Lalor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Division of Lalor is an Australian Electoral Division in the state of Victoria.
The Division was proclaimed at the redistribution of May 11, 1949, and was first contested at the 1949 Federal election.
It was named after Peter Lalor, the Commander in Chief of the miners at the Eureka Stockade, and a former member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly.

Peter Lalor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lalor was born in Tinakill, County Laois, (then known as Queen's County), Ireland, the son of Patrick Lalor, a landowner and supporter of the abolition of tithes who held a seat in the House of Commons from 1832 to 1835.
Lalor led the miners' opposition to the incompetent and often brutal administration of the mine, and was elected to lead the men of the stockade, in which he was wounded and, ultimately, had his arm amputated.
Lalor was the author of the oath of allegiance used by the miners at the Eureka Stockade which he swore to their affirmation.

Peter Lalor (5 February, 1827 - 9 February, 1889) was one of the key leaders of the Eureka Stockade rebellion, one of Australia's few armed uprisings and sometimes characterised as the "birth of democracy" in Australia.
Lalor was born in Tinakill, Queen's County, Ireland, the son of a landowner and supporter of Home Rule who held a seat in the House of Commons for a time.
The northern Melbourne suburb of Lalor is named for him, as is a federal electorate, the Division of Lalor.

Lalor, Cyclopaedia of Political Science, V.2, Entry 368, NEW YORK: Library of Economics and Liberty
The loco-foco division of the party ceased after 1839; the hunker and barnburner division continued even after the adoption of the constitution of 1846, which removed the original cause of division, and the barnburners then became practically the regency party, though Croswell and Marcy, of the regency, inclined toward the hunker faction.
The democratic division as to banks was then healed, and the legislature in 1841, and the governor in 1842, again became democratic.
But their close political associate, Vice-President Arthur, became president at Garfield's death; and the division of feeling was thus extended into the state election of 1882, which resulted in the choice of a democratic legislature and governor, the majority of the latter (192,854) being the largest yet recorded in a state election.

Lalor, Cyclopaedia of Political Science, V.1, Entry 381, DIVISION OF LABOR: Library of Economics and Liberty
The division of employments is a natural consequence of the life of man in society.
—It is plain that the division of labor is both a consequence and a cause of the development of nations, and of the progress which they make in all branches of human knowledge.
The division of labor tends constantly to increase, and is checked only by the limited extent of the market, that is to say, by the limitation which the wants of the population put to the possible sale of each kind of product.

A fall of wages means that in the division of the aggregate product less will go to the laborers, and more to the other parties to the division, but not that productive power is in any wise increased.
Here is the fallacy in the analogy which it is so often sought to draw between the effect of a reduction of wages and the effect of labor-saving machinery.
It would merely imply that in the division of the aggregate produce the laboring classes would get a smaller and other classes a relatively larger share; and that this must ultimately lessen the efficiency of labor and weaken the powers of production all experience shows.
