Mallee is derived from an Aboriginal term and is generally used to describe multi-stemmed eucalypt growth forms, whereby the stems arise from a large, underground, woody swelling or lignotuber (Noble and Bradstock, 1989).
The Western Division of NSW is used predominantly for grazing of sheep and some cattle on the native vegetation of pastoral leases.
Clearing of mallee lands for agriculture is seen as 'the most obvious factor responsible for the demise of the malleefowl' (Priddel, 1990a), however this is primarily a concern in the wheatbelt of central NSW.

The forelimbs of the Mallee Worm-lizard are entirely absent and vestigial hindlimbs occur as small scaly flaps near the cloacal vent.
The Mallee Worm-lizard is distributed in a narrow band from southeast Western Australia, through southern South Australia, the northwest corner of Victoria and southwestern New South Wales (Cogger 2000).
The distribution of the Mallee Worm-lizard is severely fragmented such that local populations of the species are vulnerable to extinction via stochastic events.

The Division and the Bendigo Health Care Group were successful in a tender to develop and implement the role of a advanced aged care nurse looking at clinical assessment skills in preventing or reducing transfers to the ED department or admissions to the acute sector and communication with GPs.
The Division will initially work with a small number of Aged Care Facilities in the area for the first six months to pilot the model, then eventually extend the reach of the project to all interested Facilities.
In Whitehorse Division there are a number of Aged Care Homes that support GPs quite well and there are some that would benefit from setting up a systematic approach to communication with the residents GPs.

DNR plays a vital role in the life of the Western Division, working cooperatively with the community in (i) administering leases, other Crown Lands, and the Unincorporated Area, (ii) managing water, and (iii) protecting and improving the Division's soils and native vegetation.
The Division is sparsely populated, with fewer than 2000 primary producer enterprises (virtually all family businesses) and only the mining communities of Broken Hill, Lightning Ridge and Cobar having urban populations greater than 3,000 people.
Native vegetation in the region, 95 per cent of which remains unmodified except for grazing and control of wild fires, is typical of semi–arid rangeland environments.

The Murray Mallee Division of General Practice (MMDGP) was established in November 1995 and is based in the major population centre of the region - the Rural City of Murray Bridge in south eastern South Australia.
The Division was established at the same time as the Hills Mallee Southern Regional Board and Regional Health Service, and this assisted in the development of close and enduring links with the public health system.
The socio-economic status of the Murray Mallee was measured as.944 (91 census).

The transfer of part of the town of Diggers Rest from the Division of Lalor to the Division of Gorton was not agreed, on the basis that the compensating movement of electors would affect neighbouring divisions' boundaries.
One objection related to the transfer of the Dergholm area from the Division of Wannon to the Division of Mallee.The augmented Electoral Commission determined that the Redistribution Committee's proposal was appropriate given the aim of retaining entire municipal boundaries in a particular Division wherever possible.
The third detailed objection suggested that the Division of Gippsland be comprised of the entire Shires of East Gippsland, Wellington, South Gippsland and Bass Coast and that the Division of McMillan be comprised of the City of La Trobe in its entirety, the Shire of Baw Baw and part of the Shire of Cardinia.

The Division had noted that the GPs who worked most successfully within the Rumbalara Aboriginal community tended to use a culturally sensitive and unpressured approach to patient care that was accepted by the community.

The reality of this issue was brought home to the Murray Mallee Division of General Practice in 1997, when solo general practitioners in two of our outlying towns moved on, one after 43 years in the town.
Over the last 7 years Divisions of General Practice around Australia have shown that in their involvement with communities; whether it be injury prevention, health promotion or in this case, GP recruitment; they are excellent catalysts of change.
The Division’s role is to assist with the planning process, sourcing of grants, evaluation and most importantly to provide the much-needed medical perspective.

This article describes the use of POCT for the risk assessment and management arms of the Mallee Track program (focussing particularly on the latter), and reports the level of satisfaction among community members with diabetes, their doctors and allied health professionals with the new POCT services provided as part of this project.
Members of the Mallee Track community were invited to participate in community risk assessment sessions held in seven towns across the region: Ouyen, Murrayville, Walpeup, Underbool, Patchewollock, Speed and Manangatang.
Two key challenges for the program are: (i) the on-going maintenance of the local diabetes register and the commitment to continue performing key POC pathology tests at the frequency recommended for best practice management; and (ii) attention to the care and follow up of people identified at greatest risk for diabetes via the community risk assessment sessions.
