It was named after the local Aboriginal name for Lake George, which was located in the division when it was established at Federation in 1901.
In spite of this, and further major changes to its borders that saw it become a south-western Sydney city electorate over 150 km away from Lake George, it has retained the name of Werriwa, primarily as it is an original Federation electorate.
Werriwa is currently represented by Mark Latham, the Leader of the parliamentary wing of the Federal Australian Labor Party and Leader of the Opposition.

This border, or backing, was of a shape representing the division to which the battalion was allotted, and not necessarily symmetrical with the battalion shape, for example 2/19th Australian Infantry Battalion's colour patch was a half-sized battalion patch diamond-shaped brown over mid-green, within the grey horizontal oval of the 8th Australian Division.
