In the twelve months prior to the 2004 election there were four well-attended public meetings, at which Yarra residents have made it clear they are dissatisfied with Yarra Council's response to the threat, and want strong action from the council to oppose the road lobby and the State Government's pro-road, anti-sustainable transport stance.
Yarra should call on the State government to restructure its planning agencies and processes to break the power of the road lobby.
This structure works to ensure that Yarra's own branch of the road lobby in Transport Planning is quarantined from the urban planners in Strategic Transport, and given its own separate budget, so it can go on lobbying for roads without being answerable to anyone with expertise in urban planning.
