The title diwan is derived from the name of a particular sofa-like piece of sitting furniture known as a divan, which is the common shape of thrones in the Indian subcontinent, either a Hindu Gadi or a Muslim Musnaid.
Nowadays, the title is used amongst certain upper-middle-class families in the Indian subcontinent; several landlords in villages and provinces across the subcontinent have names prefixed with this title.
Diwan Deo was the hereditary title borne by the Chief Minister of Cooch, held by a junior branch of the ruling Narayan dynasty

The title itself as used in Egypt had only very recently been introduced by the British when they declared a protectorate over Egypt in 1914.
In the 18th and 19th century, Ottoman sultans used this title to optimum effect as the rallying call to all Muslims in order to thwart colonialist designs on the diminishing Ottoman territories.
However, other historians relate that the Ottomans only assumed this title after Salim I conquered Cairo in 1517 and forced the last Abbasid caliph, Mohamed Al-Mutawakkil-Ala-Allah, who at the time was residing in the Egyptian capital, to recognise him as such.

Yet the patterns of awarding titles remained a distinctly provincial and regional actibvity amnd there was no central "system" until efforts began in the late 1880s at standardizing and rationalizing the award of titles.
Other areas were more ambiguous, and “Rai” and “Rao” titles were bestowed in almost equal numbers in the Central Provinces and Central India, in Hyderabad, in Mysore, and in Rajputana and Ajmer-Merwara; in many cases, nominated title recipients were consulted as to their personal preference between the “Rai” and “Rao” appellations.

In history this great Ismaili dai and poet is well known by his title 'Al-Mu'ayyad-fid-Din and sometimes merely as 'Al-Muayyad'.
They also call him al Salmani because al-Mu'ayyad has called himself by this name in his diwan.
Some biographers believe that he was descended from Salman al-Farsi but al-Mu'ayyad explains it differently in his diwan when he says:
