 The First Jazz Records
It was an immediate success and this record is considered the spark that ignited the Jazz fad that seized the world in the years during and after World War I. The Original Dixieland Jass Band was a group of White musicians from New Orleans.
Apparently the record was to be released under the name of Borbee's Tango Orchestra but the band's name was changed from "Tango" to "Jass" to take advantage of the success of the Original Dixieland Jass Band and the Jazz craze that they had spawned in New York.
Their first record Johnson's "Jass" Blues and Canary Cottage were fairly "jazzy" in style as are the records that they recorded in July and August of 1917.

Dixieland Fake Book, Vol.2 - Tenor Banjo and Plectrum Banjo
Volume 1 is the "basic book" with all the commonly played Dixieland tunes, tunes commonly requested for hotel and convention gigs, and some advanced goodies to grow on.
Volume 2 is the advanced book featuring transcriptions of classic records that aren't commonly played because the tunes can be difficult and the music has not been widely available.
These are jazz records and from the start the melody line is often embellished, and what melody there is may not even be repeated consistently.

Recording companies often invest a lot of time and money in discovering new talent or developing the talent of artists already under contract.
Many times, the record label's decisions are correct ones, but this typically frustrates the artist who feels that their artwork is being destroyed.
In the early days of the recording industry, record labels were absolutely necessary for the success of any artist.

One of the great appeals of traditional Dixieland music is the distinct beat obtained by using a banjo and tuba for the rhythm section.
Some try to put down the Original dixieland Jazz Band because: 1) they were white (yep, anyone whose skin color is white and plays jazz or dance music is labeled a phony or a robber of fl music.

The Original Dixieland Jazz Band had recorded for Columbia in January 1917, but the session was unsuccessful and the band had to come back and re-record the songs, thus the release of the Columbia sides did not come about until after the amazing success of the Victor records.

Matty Matlock's Dixieland records of the late '50s were consistently excellent, but the chances are good that Warner Bros. will never get around to reissuing the music on CD.
The first of two LPs (which were also at one time available as a twofer) by clarinetist Matty Matlock's Paducah Patrol does not really tell the story of Dixieland, but it serves as a good excuse for the playing of some hot music.
Clarinetist Matty Matlock recorded a fine series of Dixieland records from 1957-60, but all are currently out of print; fortunately, they can sometimes be found fairly cheaply in used record stores.

There are no definitive melody lines for some of these tunes, so I transcribed portions of the original recordings; some King Oliver tunes, such as Chattanooga Stomp and Snake Rag, are extremely difficult to work with, and melody lines often had to be interpolated rather than merely transcribed.
For example, when I did "If I could be with you", I decided that the verse wasn't important; as a result of playing it regularly, I changed my mind and made a separate page with the verse, then changed it again because the turnaround seems to be standard.
