DJALU GURRUWIWI: Yothu Yindi band was the first to take some of my yidakis overseas, and through that, Yothu Yindi have said that the yidakis were from me. They heard the different sound in it, and people started wondering where that sound came from and actually wanted to meet up with me personally.

Thanks to Peter Brady's introduction, we were invited by Djalu' Gurruwiwi to visit his community, spend time making instruments with him and document the process.
Djalu' is widely known as a custodian of yidaki (didgeridoo) knowledge for his Gaalpu and other related clans of Northeast Arnhem Land, and has become the most famous Aboriginal didge maker in the outside world.
Djalu' stressed to us repeatedly that he wants people to visit him, to learn about him as a real person.

Djalu' continued teaching me and whenever we met I took the chance to learn about his culture, his language, dance, ceremony and social affiliations to other indigenous groups.

The dancing that Dhopiya, Samantha and Djalu's daughter performed was mesmorizing, everyone sat quiet in their seats as they watched the dancers and heard the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo, played at its best.

In volume 2 of the series, Gurritjiri Gurruwiwi offers 21 traditional landscapes through his singing (and the yidaki/didjeridu of Djalu Gurruwiwi).
Djalu Gurruwiwi is sitting down with two of his sons (Larrtyjanna and Barrnyulnyul), giving them some pointers and passing on some of the intricacies of the traditional rhythms.
For example, Djalu may get Larrtyjanna to first sing a particular rhythm using his nose, mouth and tongue and then it is played on the instrument.

Once arriving I met The Gurruwiwi’s and in particular Djalu whom welcomed me. I explained that I was after a Didjeridu, after looking at and playing a few I wanted something unique so we ventured out cutting some timber and I assisted Djalu in crafting some.
We hunted a sea turtle by boat, one of the Aboriginal boys jumping off the front of the boat with a large spear and harpooning it, then towing it back to shore where a underground oven/ fire was waiting.

Five years after the recordings took place, now finally available: the complete Djalu Gurruwiwi - Rripangu Yidaki trilogy.
After the legendary Rripangu Festival 2002 in Eisenbach, Germany, Djalu Gurruwiwi took the opportunity to record a complete Galpu song cycle together with his family, to document and preserve a part of his clan's heritage for posterity.
The first part of the trilogy was available shortly afterwards in limited quantities but was soon sold out.

It was a great honour for me to be able to learn traditional Yirdaki playing with Djalu and Larry, and was amazed at their dedication, patience and willingness to share their knowledge with such grace and passion.

During Little Hawk's meeting with Galpu clan elder, Djalu' Gurruwiwi, they decided to play music together (Djalu' Gurruwiwi on the traditional yidaki of Australia and Little Hawk playing the traditional flute of Turtle Island).
