Hamsters were developed as a model for Lyme disease, which is transmitted through the bite of a deer tick.
Though hamsters do not themselves contract the tick-borne disease, people, pets and livestock are quite susceptible to the bite of the tiny deer tick who carries the parasite responsible for the disease.
Hamsters will continue to be needed for testing the effectiveness of various antibiotics in treating Lyme disease, as well as in developing diagnostic tests.A desert species commonly known as the Djungarian hamster is found in Mongolia and parts of Siberia and Manchuria.

Changes in fertility (delivery success), fecundity (litter size and weaning success), sensitivity to pregnancy-blocking stimuli (mate removal after 24 h), and hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian function were assessed during reproductive aging in the Djungarian hamster, Phodopus campbelli.
Fertility and fecundity were halved by 8 mo of age, and the response to pregnancy-blocking stimuli disappeared by 4-6 mo. Pup birth weight increased with maternal age and decreasing litter size.
Similarities to reproductive aging in long-cycle species (including primates) suggest that the Djungarian hamster is a useful laboratory model that deserves further investigation.

NEL, Effect of superior cervical ganglionectomy on the ultrastructure of pinealocytes
On the contrary 2,5 fold increase in the number of “synaptic” ribbons was observed in ganglionectomized animals in comparison to sham-operated controls.
CONCLUSION: Deprivation of sympathetic innervation leads in Djungarian hamsters not only to suppression of melatonin synthesis and secretions but, as appears from our studies, induces also morphological changes suggesting lower metabolic and secretory activity of pinealocytes.
Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the ultrastructure of pinealocytes in the Djungarian hamster following bilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy.
