MS Rubinar-8/500 Macro Catadioptric Lens Review
Maksutov invented a catadioptric system (National Prize of the USSR, 1941) over 60 years ago.
The biggest Maksutov telescopes (70 cm meniscus diameter) are mounted in the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory (Georgia) and the Cerro EL Roble Observatory (Chile).
This gives you much more control, and also helps you to eliminate less obvious threats that are not flagged as spyware but still put your system at risk.

[ATM] RE: Dumb Cassegrain question   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
I'm reading Dmitry Maksutov's first book (Telescope Optics), in the original Russian (and no, I don't know of an English translation)...and he describes such a scope with a flat secondary as a 'ring telescope'...but it has a very large central obstruction in that setup.
As only one of many examples...he did a thorough analysis of *all* types of two-mirror telescopes (Mersenne, Cass, Greg, etc.)...and showed that there exist some aplanatic designs for two-mirror scopes that use two concave ellipsoids...sort of like a Gregorian, but the focal plane is between the two mirrors...which is fine for an imaging system.
You have a central magnified region to view your favorite opera singer, but the periphery is at unit magnification so that you still see things in context of the larger scene...and the 'eyepiece' has no refracting elements at all.

Re: SCTs and chromatic error on double stars
Going back to the Maksutov, it is worth realising, that the original designs of the scope that is now so common, were largely quite high focal ratio instruments (f/20 to f/35), and usually had seperate secondaries, rather than the 'silvered spot' designs.
The 'silvered spot' design, places a serious constraint on the optics, that the rear curve of the corrector, has to match the curve required for the secondary, this is cheap to make, but does not give such good correction as is possible with seperate optics.
It should be, because -- like an SCT -- the Maksutov is using a single layer of glass to correct spherical aberration.

Full-aperture meniscus corrector 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
In 1941 Anton Bowers and Dmitry Maksutov separately arrived at a similar idea on how to minimize aberrations of a spherical mirror.
They proposed placing concentric, or near-concentric meniscus lens at some distance in front of the mirror.
Maksutov found solution to it by making the meniscus focal length invariant of the wavelength.

Evolution of the Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope by John F. Gills, Ph.D.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Later the Schmidt Corrector Plate was applied to the Cassegrain design and the Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope was born.
Eleven years later, two men, A. Bouwers of Amsterdam, Holland, in February of 1941 and Dmitry Maksutov of Moscow, Russia, in October of 1941 independently conceived the idea of replacing Schmidt's complexly shaped corrector plate with a curved lens, called the Meniscus Corrector Shell.
This shell also corrected for the spherical aberration and was easier to manufacture which opened the way for the telescope we have come to know as the Maksutov-Cassegrain.

 [ATM] Extended Object Brightness
I am in the proces of translating Dmitry Maksutov's first book (Astronomical Optics) from Russian to English.
In one section, if I recall corretly, he points out that glancing at the sun with the unaided eye is not instantly damaging because (among other things) the eye's imperfections will spread out this small image of the sun somewhat...lowering the energy level somewhat.
Maksutov went so far in his studies of the inhomogeneities of the eye as to make drawings and to map out the inhomogeneities in one of his eye.

Impexbank President Dmitry Eropkin said that now the ARB was looking at the idea of forming a banking club with sufficient resources to solve refinancing problems to help credit companies.
However, he said that “the ARB still has to discuss the concrete mechanism of such refinancing.”
According to Bank of Moscow finance director Yury Maksutov, this idea can be explained as a pool of banks transferring part of their means to the management of the ARB, which will provide credit to member banks experiencing trouble.
