Markov continued to show the world he is a force in the pole vault with a leap of 5.85m and win at the Lausanne Grand Prix in July 2000.
Markov's leap moved him to the No 2 vaulter in history and at only 26 years of age he looks as if he will be the athlete to replace Bubka as the world leading vaulter.
Dmitri has vaulted steadily during the 2005/06 season and was 3rd in the Nationals and 2nd in the Victorian Champs at the MCG.

Markov, the 2001 world champion, lost his pole when he left Australia two weeks ago and none of the three airlines he flew with to reach Europe - Qantas, Lufthansa and Swiss Air - has been able to trace it.
Markov said he believed the pole was the one he used to clear 6.05metres and win the 2001 world championship but later clarified that if it wasn't exactly the same pole, it was one of the same design, size and flexibility.
Markov, a former Belarusian who moved to Australia in 1997, said he had found a pole with the same flexibility but it was too big for his hand, while another was too heavy.
