Notes on Six Romances on Lyrics by British Poets, Opus 62/140 (1942)
When Hitler’s troops invaded the USSR and laid siege to Leningrad, thousands of Soviet citizens, among them Shostakovitch and his family, were forced to evacuate.
His literary bent created difficulty for him in selecting text for his songs, for he had to find poetry that both had impressive content and was suited to his compositional style.
Shostakovitch accompanied baritone Efrem Flaks in the work’s premiere at the Moscow Conservatory on June 6, 1943.

The other, titled "Anti-formalist Rayok" was never published while Shostakovitch was alive - it is a very fl datire about the outrageous and life-threatening demands composers, like all other people working creatively, were subjected to during the Stalinist era.
The brutal ignorance of those in power and the victims' despair are shown in Shostakovitch's grotesque, and to this day almost unknown piece of music.

This film about the great composer Dmitri Shostakovitch was initially begun by the St. Petersburg film–maker Semion Aranovitch.
This is a film about the triumph of powerful art and about the defeat and death of a weak man burdened by his gift.
This biography of Shostakovitch, which includes the most acute moments of social life in Soviet Russia, had become the foundation for a reflection and an overview of the tragic destiny of the artist, always alone but not separated from his epoch and his homeland.

Shostakovich - A Musical Cold War Rages On
Taruskin is central to a small group of mostly American scholars who with their media allies have stepped up the offensive to challenge this "cult".
They laugh off MacDonald's extensive research and critiques housed in his website 'Music Under Soviet Rule' and ridicule musicologist Allan Ho and lawyer-musician Dmitry Feofanov's huge summation of the issues surrounding the controversy in their recent 720-page 'Shostakovich Reconsidered'.
What is central to the debate is how it impacts on Shostakovich's music; it could significantly change the way we perceive even outwardly ideologically correct works like the 'Leningrad' Symphony and the 11th Symphony (subtitled '1905' in commemoration of the Bolshevik Revolution).

Sunday afternoon’s concert of the crack Czech Philharmonic led by Vladimir Ashkenazy completed their three-concert Carnegie Hall exploration of music of the Soviet era, focusing on its two leading figures, Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovitch.
In the Scherzo, one of those typically bittersweet, laughing-on-the-outside-crying-on-the-inside Shostakovitch pieces, Repin cut loose with plenty of the required wildness, and the orchestra, which had provided an aptly gray background in the Nocturne, was with him all the way.
The Czech band kicked off the Passacaglia with a powerful orchestral introduction and the work progressed with steadily increasing intensity leading to Repin’s breathtaking cadenza, moving in its pain, awesome in the way he combined meaning, tone and technical accuracy.
