  Dnepr (motorcycle) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dnepr Днепр (Russian), or Dnipro Дніпро (Ukrainian), is the brandname of heavy motorcycles produced in Kiev, Ukraine.
The original design for KMZ heavy motorcycles, and their cousin the IMZ, is taken from the pre-WWII German BMW motorcycle R71, which the Soviet Union licensed in 1940.
This motorcycle was used prominently in the movie Garden State, with Zach Braff.

When the Soviet Army captured BMW R75 motorcycle combinations during the war, an attempt was made to incorporate its advanced features in an upgraded Dnepr M-73 motorcycle combination with powered sidecar.
Dnepr motorcylces were painted olive green (army), dark blue (police) or fl (government) until 1954, when civilian colour schemes became available as well.

Now honestly, my original plan was to remove the rear end of the motorcycle to do spline lubing before assembling the sidecar, but I really wanted to put it together and ride it.
Turns out the crappy Dnepr wheels aren't very round, ha ha, and the headshake was related to the spinning of the wheel.
I substituted the other Dnepr wheel, and the headshake was less intense, but similar in frequency.

URAL motorcycles are equipped with four-stroke air-cooled flat-twin engines, a four speed gear box with reverse gear, shaft drive, two disc dry clutch, spring shock absorbers and drum brakes.
The Dnepr is built by a plant in Kiev, Ukraine known as KMZ (Kiev Motor Works).
However, as people love names and because the KMZ was located near the "Dnepr" river that runs through the capital of Kiev, the name "Dnepr" was born and soon attached to the bikes coming out of Kiev Motor Works.

Dnepr motorcycles seem to have a common heritage with the Ural, based on the BMW R71.
The Dnepr is currently being imported into the U.S. by the Russian-American Motorbike Company in Seattle and are sold as kits.
Dneprs in the old Soviet empire actually had 3 different assembly lines with varying degrees of quality.

I posted a query about it on some of the Russian motorcycle forums I frequent and some possibilities are a grenaded alternator, loose flywheel bolts and a shot crank bearing.
Two years ago, anybody who owned a motorcycle was allowed to park it inside the factory compound near the bicycle racks while all the lowly cage drivers had to herd out in the employee lot like the bunch of undisciplined cattle they are.
Speaking of the Dnepr, the gentleman who built the motor called me last night, quite upset that one of his engines had failed.
