2000/07/03 00:50 Conflict Between SDA and Dnevni Avaz
Dnevni avaz, the daily which is the harbinger of the emerging media empire in Bosnia & Herzegovina, and which is owned by Fahrudin Radoncic, has declared an open war to its recent patron and protector, the ruling Party of Democratic Action (SDA).
In the meantime the driver whose behavior to a journalist had been the immediate cause of the first public conflict between Avaz and the prime minister, was punished with a reduction of salary by 30 per cent, and in return Avaz was “treated” by a visit of tax inspectors in its premises.
Despite the blocked accounts, Avaz is still regularly published thanks, as they themselves say, to the resoluteness of all employees to continue work although the possibility is announced of interruption of printing the paper any day.

Although Dnevni Avaz is a privately owned paper, there have long been speculations that the SDA partly financed the launching of the daily.
Some say the flattering reputation forced Avaz to live up to it; others, notably the paper’s own staff, hold that the overall situation in the country, the conduct of SDA officials and their sensitivity toward criticism all facilitated the changes.

Dnevni avaz quoted an unnamed source close to international community intelligence operations as saying that the secret talks had been coordinated with British intelligence.
According to the source, Karadzic and Mladic had attempted to cut a deal with UN tribunal prosecutors to allow them to remain free during their trials or to surrender in a country known to be friendly to Serbs, such as Orthodox brothers Greece or Russia.
Though the Avaz report has not been independently confirmed, it would not have been the first time that the international community had negotiated with Karadzic - despite repeated failed arrest operations led by SFOR, creating the impression that the suspect’s whereabouts was unknown.

On-line edition of Dnevni Avaz offers a selection of articles from the printed edition of the paper and weekly publications Azra and Sport.
Dnevni Avaz was founded at the end of 1995 by Fahrudin Radoncic, a journalist from Sandzak in Serbia, and quickly became the best selling daily newspaper in the Federation B-H. The paper received generous funding at the launch, which helped it to raid best journalists from its rival, Sarajevo daily Vecernje Novine.
Thus it was frequently able to beat its competitors in Oslobodjenje and Vecernje Novine with exclusives obtained from the inner party circles, which may explain its quick rise to prominence.
