  Dnieper river - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dnieper River ( Russian : Днепр/Dnepr ; Belarusian : Дняпро/Dnyapro ; Ukrainian : Днїпро/Dnipro) is a river (2,290 km length) which flows from Russia through Belarus and then Ukraine.
The Dnieper river is mentioned by the Ancient Greek historian Herodotus in the 5th century BC as Borysthenes, the Roman historians called it Danaper and its Old Slavic name used at times of Kievan Rus' was Slavutich.
Approximately the last 800 km of the river is a chain of almost consecutive reservoirs.

Dnipro GIS Pilot Project was aimed at developing a pilot Geographic Information System (GIS) for the management of the Dnipro watershed environmental data using Zaporizhia region as a case study.
The project was not directly connected with the Dnipro issues, and its approval may serve as an example of IDRC readiness to compromise, that led to positive consequences: the project went far beyond its initial goals.

Ukraine is one of the most environmentally degraded republics of the former Soviet Union, with 70% of its population living in areas considered environmentally dangerous, and the Dnipro River is the country's number one environmental priority.
The river's main sources of pollution include nuclear fallout from the Chernobyl disaster, toxic pesticides and herbicides used in agriculture, heavy metals and organochlorine compounds from industry, untreated sewage from municipalities, and high levels of air pollution.
