  Do Bigha Zameen
Bimal Roy with his innate reserve and good taste chooses a much wider context in which to place his narrative thus looking at rural poverty at one end and the brutalizing effects of city life at the other end.
Do Bigha Zameen is a sad and moving tale which Roy projects with much sympathy, understatement and simplicity and gives us a film that is very human and has great emotional depth.
The film is strongly influenced by the Italian neo-realist Cinema and particularly evokes De Sica's masterpiece Bicycle Thief (1949) particularly in the scenes of the father and son in the city.

Balraj Sahni almost lost out on the lead role in 'Do Bigha Zameen.' Bimal Roy wondered whether his sophisticated looks and polished westernised self would be able to interpret the role of a poor peasant.
One of the key films of our golden age in cinema, 'Do Bigha Zameen' is arguably also the only Bombay film from that period which can be proudly placed among the contemporary world classics.
'Do Bigha Zameen' is the story of a poor peasant Shambhu who is in danger of losing his small plot of land to the village moneylender.

When his Do Bigha Zameen (1953) opened to stunned audiences in India and abroad, it was instantly recognized as Hindi cinema’s foray into neo-realism.
Bimal Da cast Nutan as Kalyani in Bandini (1963) in what is arguably the strongest performance by an actress seen on the Hindi film screen (in the same league of the quiet, yet raw and volcanic performances of Nargis in Mother India, Shabana Azmi in Ankur and Smita Patil in Bhumika).
When Bimal Da went on stage to accept his Filmfare trophies for Do Bigha Zameen in dhoti, kurta and chappals, Bombay’s upscale film coterie raised a hue and cry.
