Splendid: Features: Do Make Say Think
In the five years since the release of their self-titled debut, Toronto-based Do Make Say Think have become one of the most notable acts on the Constellation label.
That's usually what we do: we keep going back to the same song and laying track after track after track of different ideas and then the mixing process is what actually makes it into the song.
I'd like to be able to say you can't really define us and we're just doing our thing, but the truth of the matter is we don't want to write a post-rock this and we don't want to write a free-jazz that.

 Do Make Say Think
The Do Make Say Think debut album sold well for an indy release, and the response was strong enough to grab the attention from some of the cinematic lords of darkness, godspeedyouflemperor!.
It was at this point where the Do Makes made a quantum leap in their growth as a band that the rays of promise were strong enough to illuminate an entire album.
Do Make Say Think has overcome a great hurdle, to build a strong interdependent relationship as friends and musicians and are able to continue to grow as a unit.

Constellation - Bands - do make say think / Biography
Do Make Say Think came together in Toronto in 1995-96 and self-released their self-recorded, self-titled debut CD in 1997.
Do Make Say Think records are marked by a fiercely independent approach to recording and mixing that is re-imagined for each release, but which always remains the band's own; Charles and Ohad have emerged as a distinctive production team, now working out of Ohad's Toronto studio th'Schvitz.
Members of DMST are involved in numerous other groups as diverse as Justin’s messy garage-soul rave-up Lullabye Arkestra; Charles’ collaboration in playing and producing with Kevin Drew in KC Accidental and Broken Social Scene; and Brian Cram's schlock-metal outrage Gesundheit, which has recruited various DMST members for recordings and Eastern European tour sludgery.

Oh My Rockness ((Do Make Say Think))
DMST's main strength is the technical wizardry of their drumming, via both machine and man. It is this emphasis on percussion that most noticeably sets this band apart from bands like Godspeed.
They do have their fair share of ambient strings and synths, yet it's as if the dramatic sounds support, rather than lead, the beat.
DMST play wistfully restrained music that is best listened to in the dead of winter, as the music equally compliments the bleak season's despair yet leaves hope for the possibility of warmer days ahead.

Do Make Say Think - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Do Make Say Think is a Canadian instrumental post-rock band from Toronto, Ontario.
They rehearsed for the aforementioned production in an empty elementary school room, there they took the four simple verbs 'Do', 'Make', 'Say' and 'Think' from the walls of the room and adopted them as their band name.
Do Make Say Think are routinely joined on stage by Brian Cram, who along with James Payment also performs in a metal band similar to Eagles of Death Metal called Gesundheit.

Do Make Say Think are an interesting band.
The simple fact is that this music makes it difficult to be in a bad mood, which is a great thing to come home to after a crappy day of work or school.
If you like Do Make Say Think, maybe you have another one of their albums, then there is no doubt in my mind that you should really consider buying this one.

SPACE CITY ROCK: Live -- Do Make Say Think/Midlake
They had this projector displaying on a screen behind them some sort of "line art" emblem with their name written under it, and it seemed a bit silly for an opening band to be this commercially sophisticated.
Paying more attention to the music, I would say that Midlake was an interesting band, filled with actual musicians who obviously are sincere and concerned with the music they make.
I was not expecting this type of performance; right in the middle of their set, I found myself grasping for an appropriate way to categorize these guys, and I decided on this "An aural representation of James Joyce on Acid." Everything they did was seamless and extremely entertaining.

Do Make Say Think don't even live in a network of underground caves.
The Do Makes have come via Scandinavia and a brief jaunt on the continent to be in - where else - Shoreditch this evening, and as I sit down with Justin at one of the Spitz's outside tables, early-period Prodigy blares from speakers on the other side of the cavernous, empty Spitalfields market.
I think people are a little confused because it's our loosest record, our most un-together record, but the way it was created was so totally meticulous.

Combining elements of jazz, ambient, and progressive rock, Do Make Say Think were quickly identified as part of Canada's highly-touted "post-rock" scene.
Do Make Say Think's debut eponymous album absolutely blew me away the first time I heard it.
It was subtle yet immediately engaging, a contradiction illustrated by the fact that it opened with about a minute and a half of silence before a light jazz beat comes in slowly introducing you to the laid back ambient feel of the album.

Do Make Say Think succeeds fairly well at doing what they're doing, all odds against them.
Although both their self-titled debut and "Goodbye Enemy Airship..." were quite good, "and Yet and Yet" takes Do Make Say Think to a completely different level in terms of their songwriting.
The old do make say think is still there but i guess theyve just become more accessible.Which is so not a bad thing, because accessible usually means good.

A few weeks later, a copy of the review appeared on the Constellation website with a short disclaimer calling the review "asinine." Those in the business of Godspeed side projects don't react kindly to the notion that Godspeed side projects are no longer (were never?) fashionable.
Unfortunately (or, rather, fortunately), the new record by the Toronto based instrumental/jazz group Do Make Say Think is, so far, the best thing that has been released this year.
This is cut short a little bit, and the song segues into the gorgeous "Soul and Onward." For the first time, Do Make Say Think add vocals into the mix, even though there aren't any words, just singing.

Do Make Say Think are one of those bands that you just happen to stumble accross.
i once read a reviewer say of the beginning of this song, "in one part of this song, and you'll know when you hear it, you will have to pick yourself up off the floor to look in the mirror to make sure your insides haven't shot out your nose." pretty intense nonetheless.
Toronto's Do Make Say Think, with their own special brand of post-rock, is absent of any distinctive vocals (there's some inaudible street noise in one track, plus some gentle feminine "ahhs" worked into the mix on another track) and delivers the closest this list comes to a satisfying electronic release.

Do Make Say Think formed in 1995-96 in Toronto, Canada.
The four basic verbs 'Do', 'Make', 'Say', 'Think' adorned the walls of said classroom, and these elementary-level educational placards were adopted as a project name for the nascent group.
Although their music has a natural homespun quality that aligned them with the early nineties lo-fi movement, they are now in a much less easily categorised area; blending an almost neo-acoustic folkiness with harder-edged electronics.

The Canadian post-rock ensemble Do Make Say Think have clearly figured this out and toy with the idea of the trinity to tremendous effect on the latest full-length, Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn, due out October 6.
Do Make Say Think seems to fully utilize the potential of such patterns instead of using them as a gimmick, crafting music that builds upon itself - and forces its way into your memory - in ways both readily apparent and completely obscure.
For every time DMST tosses out a spine-tingling or thunderous crescendo, the musician s reveal other disparate elements, such as toned-down reflections with crystalline guitars and horns ("107 Reasons Why"), smoky, late-night jazz exercises ("Ontario Plates"), or clever tabletop cut-ups (the closing notes of "Horns of a Rabbit").

Do Make Say Think have fashioned a fourth full-length album of tremendous beauty and depth, more loosely woven than previous records and played with a dark, wistful restraint throughout.
More than any previous effort by the band, this is an album that yearns to be listened to as a whole, or at least in the triptychs defined by the 3-sided vinyl edition.
Mixed by the group at th'Schvitz, their Toronto home studio, the album continues to highlight DMST's inventive production touches, always at the service of the musical ideas.
