DO THE RIGHT THING - THE CRITERION COLLECTION DVD
Cinematically, and outside the context of the (sadly) brief debate it inspired, Do the Right Thing is Spike Lee's masterpiece.
Uncertainties about whether the "right thing" was done, and by whom, may linger, but only a more thorough examination of its final 20 minutes than was initially granted can absolve the film of its undeserved reputation and, perhaps, explain why the riots that were feared never materialized.
The folks at The Criterion Collection have done the right thing and transported the bulk of their magnificent 1995 laserdisc edition of the film, along with a few enhancements, to DVD in a superb 2-disc set.

 The Right Thing
I recently received an e-mail query from a reader that places me squarely in the position of knowing what the ethical thing is for her to do to resolve her issue, while also knowing that doing the right thing could land her in a heap of trouble.
She's right in assuming that it would be difficult for her bosses not to register her concerns as sour grapes, but that in itself doesn't outweigh her duty as an employee to defend her employer's interests.
The right thing for my reader's friend to do is to trust her own instincts and let the matter lie.

Do the Right Thing is a masterpiece -- certainly one of the most invigorating and moving experiences I've ever had at the movies.
And Do the Right Thing -- Lee's purposefully ambiguous exploration of escalating racial tensions on one Bedford-Stuyvesant block on the hottest day of the summer -- picks up where School Daze left off: with the very same rousing words.
Do the Right Thing, Lee's third feature, is by far his most complex and accomplished to date, a movie teeming with life, ablaze with sunny colors (mainly brilliant reds, oranges and yellows), pulsating with music, and charged with unresolved tensions and contradictions that gradually accumulate in the sweltering air.

DO THE RIGHT THING was taboo for how it portrayed peoples of different races, yet for film's time, the state of Harlem and its residents was portrayed with frank and genuine realness that simply can't be denied.

Movie Review - Do the Right Thing - Hollywood Bitchslap
"Do the Right Thing" was made in 1989, the period directly before Spike Lee discovered that dialogue is much more effective when characters deliver it to EACH OTHER, instead of directly at the camera; as such, it plays like "Carnal Knowledge" juiced up with racism and other thought provoking subject matter.
But...You know, of all the things that piss me off when I'm watching a movie, the one thing I truly detest is when a filmmaker hops on the ole soapbox and starts preaching.
"Do the Right Thing" is a good film that falls just short of being great; it has most of the ingredients but falters in its final moments.

Doing the right thing calls us to wisely choose the course of our lives, our profession, our spouse, our hobbies, our friends, and our leisure pursuits.
