		Though 'Love Me Do' was The Beatles' first release in their home country, in the USA their first single was 'Please Please Me' (issued as the follow-up in the UK).
		'Love Me Do' was not issued as a 45 in the USA until after the band's major breakthrough in spring 1964

		LMD is ostensibly in the key of G Major though it contains a strong Mixolydian modal inflection from the heavy use of both F-naturals in the tune and in its reliance on the I-IV-I to establish a feeling of tonal center.
		And a detail within a detail: note how at the end of the verse when Paul sings "love me do" solo, he's actually jumping the octave down from his earlier part to the range where John was singing in the duet.

		The Beatles' version of "Love Me Do" begins with bluesy harmonica played by John Lennon, then features Lennon and McCartney on joint lead vocals (George Harrison sings harmony vocals), although McCartney handles the low solo vocal line on the song's title phrase when all of the instruments go silent.
		"Please Please Me" was at this stage quite different to its eventual treatment and was dropped by Martin, which was a disappointment for the group, as they had hoped it to be the B-side to "Love Me Do".
		"How Do You Do It" was clearly number one material as Gerry and the Pacemakers were to later prove, and was far more commercial sounding at the time than "Love Me Do", but something made Martin go for their own composition.

		Also, how could Love Me Do, as good as it is, have gotten the Beatles their contract with EMI when George Martin was ready to saddle them with a song from an outside composer (How Do You Do It) for their first single and didn't think much of their original material at first?

		John and Paul wanted to establish themselves as songwriters so to overcome the stigma they had earned with Love Me Do they changed directions and came up with Please Please Me. Please Please Me was at first presented to Martin as a slow song, similar in tempo to Love Me Do.
		Love Me Do put the Beatles in a position where they either had to come up with a better song themselves or they would be covering other people's tunes and had that happened, we might never have known the genius of Lennon / McCartney, and Sir George Martin.

		In the first part of this series, we take a look at the Beatles first UK release, "Please Please Me." Released on March 22, 1963, its US counterpart was "Introducing The Beatles," released on July 22, 1963 and re-released on January 27, 1964.
		What gave The Beatles the freedom to make this wonderful recording was they were supposed to begin making their third film, but no-one agreed on a script, thus The Beatles had a three-month break to do whatever they wanted.
		Its influence came from The Beach Boy's album "Pet Sounds." As Paul McCartney said, "the album just flipped me." Although The Beach Boys were a good band, and "Pet Sounds," I believe is their best effort and a great album, there is no comparison to me between the two.
