The Battle of Britain - Home Page
The Do17 is the least known of the trio of German twin-engined bombers used during the Battle of Britain.
The He111 was numerically the superior, the Ju88 and Do17 were about equal in numbers.
The slim fuselage was unsuitable for passenger carrying and the aircraft were mothballed.

The Dornier   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
With more powerful engines coming out of a number of factories in Germany, the Do17K of which a number were bought by Yugoslovia were powered by Gnome-Rhône 14N engines and were amongst the fastest of the Dorniers by attaining a top speed of 259 mph.
The nose had been shortened on the Do17E and the Do17F variants, but the firing arc of the forward gunner was restricted somewhat and the narrow diameter of the fuselage of the Do17 which was how it became known as the "Flying Pencil" meant cramped conditions for the cockpit area of the aircraft.
One of the Do17 variants, was modified as a night fighter and had a nose section of a Ju88C fitted complete with cannon and machine guns.

 The Junkers Ju88
The introduction of the Ju88 was to boost the strength of Germany's bomber forces which already had He111 and Do17 bombers already in service.
The Ju88 was heavier than both the Dornier and the Heinkel, but even with a bombload of two 500 or 250 kilogram bombs under each wing, and twenty eight 50 kilogram bombs stored internally, the two 1,200 hp Jumo 211B engines made it faster than the other two bombers.
In many massed raids, the attrition rate was not to the proportions of the He111 and Do17, this was possibly due to the fact that when under attack, the Ju88 could break into as dive at considerable speed.

Hi, I’m Tony Hodun, and this is table of 1/48 Hobbycraft German WW II bomber aircraft kit listings I’ve developed to aid you as a modeler or collector in finding the kit you want to build the version you want to, or to fill the gaps in your collection.
Hobbycraft’s Dornier Do17, Junkers Ju88, and Arado Ar234 kit families are early kits that frankly don’t fit as well as some of their newer kits.
Hobbycraft’s Dornier Do17 family covers the five main versions from the E through the Z. The fuselage of the E/F and M/P kits has a noticeable upward curve that might be worth correcting.

The Dornier Do17 was originally developed at a transport aircraft that had it's roll turned into a bomber.
In the early days the aircraft earned the nick name of 'The Flying Pencil' due to its long slender shape.
The modifications made an impact on the performance and so the DB600 liquid cooled engines had to be replaced by more powerful Bramo Fafnir 323P engines
