	DOCOMOMO - Cultural Commons
		DOCOMOMO is an all-volunteer group comprised of historians, architects, designers, preservationists and others, working in the academic community and in the field.
		The chapters are at different levels of development and activity, yet each is working toward similar goals: sponsoring educational programs and tours; providing technical assistance on the preservation of Modern Movement buildings; conducting research and survey projects to fuel a nationwide register of Modern buildings; publishing newsletters and keeping what's Modern in the general press.

		The theme of the 2006 Conference, "Other Modernisms" proceeds from the consensus that the mainstream historiographic construction of 20th century modernism through its canonic texts and buildings has marginalized or left out entirely, some modern trajectories that are now gaining an unprecedented new legitimacy as the subject matter of revisionist histories.
		Similarly, the extensive network of Docomomo does not confine itself to canonical centers of Modernism, and is already a step toward the recognition of different and distant modernisms.

		The World Heritage Centre and ICOMOS jointly organized a session on 'Identification and Preservation of Modern Urban Heritage' during the 7th International Conference of DOCOMOMO (the International Working-party for Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement), at UNESCO Headquarters from 16-19 September 2002.
		Strategies must also be devised to advise States Parties and the general public on the importance of the protection and conservation of modern heritage.
		The DOCOMOMO Conference also focused on buildings, urban schemes and their interpretations, the audience and users and the local and international dimensions of modern architecture.

		The analysis of reception, as it was first proposed by the literature historian and theorist Hans Robert Jauss, consists, primarily, of an analysis of the original circumstances and the environment in which a particular work of art was created, produced, criticised, and judged.
		The papers in their final form (ready for publication, by e-mail or on disk) with illustrations (slides or numeric images, free from any copyright obligations) accompanied by a short summary in English (800 characters or 200 words), must be sent before the 1st May, 2002.

		DOCOMOMO began as a small network of experts, primarily European, with hands-on experience in "modern conservation." The founders expected a total membership of about 40 participants in five or six European countries.
		Important elements of the debate during the Paris conference were the strategies of conservation that some buildings have required, the enthusiasm or dislike they have provoked, and the histories — or mythologies — they have produced, notably in the mass media.

		Docomomo International is delighted to announce the creation of an annual summer residence grant in Paris to support research on the conservation and the documentation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods of the modern movement.

		The initial impetus behind the 1994 international DoCoMoMo conference at Barcelona was conservationist, but it had seemed, under its parallel self-imposed task of documentation, that it might also provide a forum for discussion from a Modern Movement viewpoint of contemporary architectural developments, or even for a reassertion of Modern Movement values and concerns.
		This is closer to home as a theme, but it is to be hoped that DoCoMoMo will not lose its forward-looking aspect and, with it, its vitality.
