  Jacquard loom
The Jacquard loom is a mechanical loom, invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1801, which used the holes punched in pasteboard punch cards to control the weaving of patterns in fabric.
The ability to change the pattern of the loom's weave by simply changing cards was an important conceptual precursor to the development of computer programming.
It is the "Jacquard head" that adapts to a great many dobbie looms[?] such as the "Dornier" brand that allows the weaving machine to then create the intricate patterns.

Dobbies may be of any weight or compactness, with yarns ranging from very fine to coarse and fluffy.
A "dobby weave" is the result of control by a dobby (dobbie) attachment on a loom of which warp yarns are raised at each insertion of weft.
Dobby control can also produce patterns such as diamonds or honeycomb, crepe, and compound woven fabric such as piqué.

A ‘dobbie’ is ‘a small…attachment to a loom for weaving small figures’.
Dobbies were used on looms ‘to increase the warp figuring capacity by up to 48 shafts.’ It might well be that the type of dobbie used in Berkshire was for 42 shafts.
This connection with the textile industry of Berkshire is interesting in terms of the actual longevity of darts which may have existed in that area longer than previously imagined.

Once again the friendly and couthy atmosphere of the old town was emphasised by the harmony in which the people worked together to make "their" pageant something worthwhile and their efforts were greatly appreciated and will be long remembered.
It is unfortunate that such an old town has not a small museum where old pictures of places and people could be shown along with a weaver’s loom and a cobbling bench which were the tools of the trades which made Maybole a thriving town in the past.
There must be many articles of interest in the town which could be gathered together and put on display so that those interested in old Maybole could see how their forefathers lived, and maybe such a museum will be formed.
