It was at the end of our great trip, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, that Villard received the devastating news from New York that left no doubt that the days of his management were numbered.
He even commissioned the installation of electric light on the S.S. Columbia, the new flagship of the reorganized Oregon Railway and Navigation Company, now the first ship to be thus equipped, a spectacular view when it sailed out at night on its maiden voyage.
