Almost 90 percent of the 112,000 hectares (nearly 300,000 acres) of wheat and barley crops in the region of Dobrich are criss-crossed by mice tunnels and perforated by their holes.
In the region of Silistra, 20 percent of all arable land belongs to small farmers who have neither joined a cooperative, nor rented their land out.

In 1949, Dobrich (the city) was named Tolbukhin in honor of the Soviet General Fedor Tolbukhin, whose 3th Ukrainian Front was responsible for liberating the region.
Tolbukhin province was created in a local government reorganization in 1959.
The names of both the city and the province were reverted back to Dobrich in 1991, after the fall of Communism.
