Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya Nikitich and Alyosha Popovich are represented together in Viktor Vasnetsov's famous 1898 painting Bogatyrs.
The word bogatyr was first mentioned in Russia time in the Sernitskiy's book "Descriptio veteris et novae Poloniae cum divisione ejusdem veteri et nova", printed in 1585 in an unknown location, in which he sais: "Rossi… de heroibus suis, quos Bohatiros id est semideos vocant, aliis persuadere conantur".
Each bogatyr tends to be known for a certain character trait: Alyosha Popovich for his bravery, Dobrynya Nikitich for his courage, and Ilya Muromets for his physical and spiritual power and integrity, and for his dedication to the protection of his homeland and people.

Problem is, I'm not Russian, so I don't really know who or what is part of the national conciousness.
He then ran around Russia, single-handedly defeating armies and enemies and resecuing people from evil.
Dobrynya Nikitich is another or the bogatyrs (medieval Russian knights-errant) - kind of like the Knights of the Round Table, without the round table I suppose - who sometimes hung out with Ilya Muromets.
