Marty has to find Doc Brown's 1955 counterpart, repair the time machine and get his parents to fall in love to set straight the damage his presence has done to the events of the past.
The series was very popular in the 1980s, even making fans out of celebrities like ZZ Top (who appeared in the third film) and President Ronald Reagan, who used the movie's title as a catch phrase in his speeches and considered accepting a role in the third film as the 1885 mayor of Hill Valley.

 Science Fiction Book Reviews
Emmet Brown, known throughout Hill Valley as a crackpot or mad scientist, has apparently succeeded in his dream to be able to travel through time and see the future.
As Doc Brown is about to leave his own time to explore the future in his kit-bashed Delorean—while Marty documents the experience on videotape—the underground network from which he illegally procured the plutonium needed to fuel his invention speeds into the Twin Pines Mall parking lot and guns down the doc.
His mission is clear: Seek out the much younger Doc Brown and convince him to help him with an invention he doesn't even know he's invented, so that he can ensure that everything is normal again when he goes Back to the Future.

The reason Doc Brown was out near the canyon where Clara dies is because he is reviewing the plan to get Marty and himself home using the railroad tracks.
It was not until Marty pointed out that Clara was supposed to have died in the Canyon (and thus had it named after her in the unpolluted future) that Doc Brown knew for sure that Clara was not supposed to have lived.
For instance, Dr. Brown died and was buried by Clara, then Clara dies at 80 in a coincidental freak accident involving a canyon and a stagecoach.

Unfortunately, Marty's quest to track down Doc Brown is interrupted by an encounter with the grill of a '53 Chevy.

My guess is that they filmed only the scene in which Doc runs frantically inside the garage and Marty recounts the story of how he came up with the flux capacitor.
