The Dock is a user interface feature in the NeXTSTEP, OPENSTEP, and Mac OS X computer operating systems, but the Dock's functionality was radically changed in Mac OS X. In NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP, the Dock is a repository to store frequently used programs.
In Mac OS X, however, the Dock is used as a repository for any program or file in the operating system.
It can hold any number of items, but resizes them dynamically and uses magnification to clarify smaller resized items, unlike the dock in the NeXT operating systems, where the capacity of the Dock is fixed and dependent on the resolution the screen is set at.

Dock (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dock is a graphical user interface feature first introduced in the NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP operating systems, and radically changed and refined in Mac OS X, where it has gained the behaviour of Newtons Newton OS Dock.
The Mac OS X Dock inherits many features from Apple's Newton OS Button Bar, including the trash can, the ability to drag application shortcuts in and out of the Finder, and animations and sounds that accompany launching of applications or moving of icons.
These features are unlike those of the dock in the NeXT operating systems, where the capacity of the Dock is fixed and dependent on the resolution the screen is set at.

The Dock gives the user allot of information about how many user programs are currently running on their computer; you can tell if a program is running by looking for a fl triangle underneath the program icon.

The essential nature of the Dock as a clearing house for almost all aspects of the Mac OS X UI not handled by the menu bar or applications themselves negates many of the post-beta improvements.
The ability to pin the Dock at one end is hampered by the population pattern of the Dock.
Similarly, anyone who wants to use a docked folder to duplicate the Apple menu must consign himself to a much larger loss of screen real estate, since the entire Dock must be visible if the one docked folder he's interested in is to behave like the always-accessible Apple menu.

The Dock is akin to a brightly-colored set of children's blocks, ideal for your first words—dog, cat, run, Spot, run—but not too effective for displaying the contents of War and Peace.
The Dock team apparently did not hear about any of these goings-on, because color is completely ignored by the Dock, both in the icon and the text, eliminating yet another attribute.

Aqua is a trade name for the graphical user interface (GUI) of Apple Computer's Mac OS X operating system and the primary theme used in this GUI (the other theme being brushed metal).
It is based around the theme of water, as its name suggests, with droplet-like elements and liberal use of translucency and reflection effects.
Two primary features of Aqua are the gel-like buttons (colored red, yellow, and green) that control the windows, and the Dock, which facilitates the launching of and navigation between applications.

Small computers are great while on the move, but can be difficult to use with a small 6-inch screen, especially when working with large spreadsheets and design applications.
Inserting the MCC into the Desktop Dock transforms the MCC into a traditional desktop computing environment replete with a full-sized desktop monitor, keyboard and mouse.
