John Dolittle (Rex Harrison, My Fair Lady, The Agony and the Ecstasy, Anna and the King of Siam) is a veterinarian, living in the quaint little town of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh, in England in 1845.
Dolittle used to be a regular doctor until he found that he generally preferred the company of animals to the company of people.
The Doctor soon raises enough money for the trip and is ready to set sail, but first takes it upon himself to free one of Blossom's trained seals who is lonely and wants to return to the wild to see her husband.

Dolittle liberates a seal from a circus and throws her into the sea so she can rejoin her husband, but is thought to be throwing a person in and is arrested.
The film was remade as Dr Dolittle (1998), starring Eddie Murphy, which abandoned the period setting and nonsense adventure for inane and vulgar modern comedy routines.
The only connection between these films and the Lofting stories is the name of the doctor and his ability to communicate with animals.

Doctor Dolittle is the central character of a series of children's books by Hugh Lofting.
Doctor Dolittle first saw light in the author's illustrated letters to children, written from the trenches during World War I when actual news, he later said, was either too horrible or too dull.
Doctor Dolittle had a few close human friends, including Matthew Mugg, the Cat's-Meat Man. The animal team consisted of Polynesia (a parrot), Gub-Gub (a pig), Jip (a dog), Dab-Dab (a duck), Chee-Chee (a monkey), Too-Too (an owl), and the Pushmi-Pullyu (a rare type of herbivore with a head on each end of its body).

Somehow, though, I doubt animals would talk like the ones in Betty Thomas' "Doctor Dolittle." Here is a film that inappropriately exercises bathroom humor to the point where you'd never find it funny again.
That movie was bad enough to convince anyone that Murphy's career would be ruined afterwards, but heroically, he stepped up to the plate again with "Doctor Dolittle." It's too bad that, in this movie, he's sort of like an "in-the-background" character, dwarfed by all these talking animals.
Now that I think of it, "Doctor Dolittle" has been made with these types of characteristics probably because people laugh more at stupidity than intelligence.
