An enormous benefit of web publication in the case of Doctor Faustus is that it allows us more easily than a print edition to move away from the production of a single composite edition (also known as a conflated or ecclectic edition) that joins parts of the A- and B-texts into a single text.
As Leah Marcus suggests in her essay "Textual Instability and Ideological Difference: The Case of Doctor Faustus," (see Unediting the Renaissance, Routledge, 1996), Greg's edition seems ultimately to support the idea that it was usually necessary to conflate early texts to achieve a satisfactory edition of a work of Elizabethan literature.
Textual variants, currently available for all other Marlowe texts, will eventually be added for Doctor Faustus, allowing users to select between the 3 extant versions of the A text and the 6 extant versions of the B text, as well as between later historical collations.

Doubtlessly among Mann's most intimately personal works, "Doctor Faustus" is also among his most complex ones; and while hardly any of his writings make for a leisurely read, the sardonic "Felix Krull," the near-humoristic "Royal Highness" and even his early masterpiece "Buddenbrooks" are foils to the older master craftsman's rapier that is drawn here.
In "Dr. Faustus", Mann revisits the German split personality (order versus bloody chaos) and makes it more intimate; he desperately wants to unearth what is it about the German Soul that gave us both World War I and then its offspring World War II and Hitler.
The author is telling a story to the willing reader as if he were almost reading it aloud, and taking asides to discourse on his deepest feelings as an exile from his homeland.

Doctor Faustus Summary & Essays - Christopher Marlowe
Christopher Marlowe based his play Doctor Faustus on stories about a scholar and magician, Johann Faust, who allegedly sold his soul to the devil to gain magical powers.
Contemporary theatre records indicate that in early performances, Faustus may have worn the cloak of a scholar, decorated with a cross, while the devil Mephistopheles appeared in the costume of a dragon.
It has been said that performances of the play were so terrifying that during the 17th century audiences believed that the devil actually appeared among them.

The contract -- signed in Faustus's blood -- stipulates that the doctor receive the services of Lucifer's lackey, Mephistophilis, for a period of 24 years, during which he may exert his will over kings and Popes, acquire untold wealth and power, or let loose in an extended bacchanalia if he so chooses.
Burton's version is slightly expurgated (eliminating the play's chorus, in particular, though putting some of the chorus's dialogue in the mouths of other characters) in order to deliver a 90-minute film, but otherwise faithfully maintains Marlowe's poetry.
In the film's single piece of stunt casting, Burton uses his two-time wife, Elizabeth Taylor (Giant, Cleopatra) -- the film was shot smack-dab in the middle of their first marriage -- to fill multiple non-speaking female roles, and to act as Faustus's dark muse and erotic obsession.
