The first of the novels, Doctor Syn: A Tale of the Romney Marsh, was published in 1915, while Thorndike was serving in the army.
It was also in the mid-'30s that Thorndike, by popular demand, decided to extend the story of Doctor Syn by writing the first follow-up book, Doctor Syn Returns, a prequel to the first book, as were all of the titles that followed, ultimately extending the timeline of the adventure back to the year 1754.
Doctor Syn on the High Seas and The Further Adventures of Doctor Syn were published in 1936, and in 1937 came The Courageous Exploits of Doctor Syn.

Philip Larkin has rightly pointed out that Dr. Syn could be any age underneath his mask, and he is undoubtedly a brilliant tactician, so there is no need for his to be rejuvenated, but my own hope is that if everyone else is getting a bit younger he should too.

Doctor Syn -- quite a name for the unassuming, fatherly, and mild-mannered vicar in the quiet English village of Dymchurch.
But of course there's more than meets the eye to the vicar, and the name "Syn" gives the readers a clue that maybe the vicar has had something of a checkered past...
I first read Thorndyke's Doctor Syn books decades ago when I was a boy, thoroughly enjoying them.

This "Dr Syn" is worth seeing, but you'll appreciate it more if you've already read the original "Dr Syn" book by Russell Thorndike.
I was disappointed that there wasn't more action in the movie, but George Arliss does a good job as the title character, and it was interesting to see an older, cagier Dr Syn -- one at the end of his career.
