List of Doctor Who DVD releases - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most Doctor Who DVDs have been released first in the United Kingdom with Region 2 coding, and released later in Australia and New Zealand (coded Region 4) and in North America (coded Region 1) coding.
There is also a video fault in the Region 1 version of the episode "The Wheel of Fortune" from The Crusade (about 10 minutes into the episode) in the William Hartnell Lost in Time DVD that is not present in the Region 2 version.
In region 1 the Hartnell and Troughton episodes were packaged separately, and sold both individually and as a boxed set.

theLogBook.com DVD Reviews - Doctor Who Lost In Time
A Doctor Who DVD release that's so hard to classify that you can't even nail it down to a single Doctor, Lost In Time is essentially an assemblage of orphaned episodes.
One difference I've noticed between the North American and British versions of Doctor Who on DVD is that the Brits get a very nicely-researched and written booklet with each release, whose text briefly goes over that story's significance in the overall Doctor Who canon and places it in some cultural context of its time.
Long a staple of the Doctor Who fan underground, the reconstructions utilize the existing audio recordings and are carefully edited to show relevant existing still photos from the episodes in question at the right time, sometimes even with subtitles.

I adore Doctor Who since I was very young I have watched it.
I have been a Doctor Who fan for 20 years and I was very delighted with the way the new series turned out.
But the region 1 DVD's will be awesome for friends and family who want to see the new show (and they ARE out there waiting impatiently in the USA).

A champion of Good, the Doctor confronted evil across the length and breadth of the space-time continuum, facing all sorts of wicked baddies in defense of the innocent and oppressed.
By far the most popular actor to play the Doctor was Tom Baker (The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad), who headlined the series from 1974 to 1981.
Doctor Who is a show that requires the viewer to engage his/her own imagination in order to fully appreciate it.

DVD Times: Region 2 Reviews: Doctor Who: Spearhead from Space
As well as introducing Jon Pertwee as the third Doctor, it was the first story to be made in colour.
For most of the first two of the four episodes, the emphasis is on establishing Pertwee's Doctor, Liz Shaw (Caroline John) as his assistant, and the whole set-up of the UNIT organisation.
It's certainly the case that Doctor Who was a little selfconscious about this: in the next story (Doctor Who and the Silurians) she gets to ask the Brigadier, "Have you never heard of women's liberation?" By all accounts her successor Jo Grant (who probably looks like a retrograde screaming teenager nowadays) was more "identifiable".

There's a bit of a dip of pace after the first few stonking stories, when the farting 'Aliens of London' remind us that 'Doctor Who' was originally intended to be a children's show, and that even TV scriptwriters can't resist occasionally bringing their inner 8-year-olds out to play.
This is in the best tradition of watch-from-behind-the-sofa 'Doctor Who' as The Doctor and Rose land in wartime London to be faced with a semi-dead child in a gas mask looking for his mummy.
Reported to be darker, wilder and sexier than 'Doctor Who', 'Torchwood' will see John Barrowman reprise the role of Captain Jack and is scheduled to air later this year in the UK in the post-watershed (ie grown-up TV time) slot of 9pm.

 Doctor Who Video FAQ
Doctor Who was predominantly shot on videotape, you’ll lose the smooth motion effect of video.
I hear that both DVD players and television sets in the UK are more versatile than are their commonly found counterparts in North America, and most (but not all) can be set to cope both with the region coding problem and the technical standards (NTSC vs PAL) problem.
The first 5 BBC DVDs to be released were closed captioned for the hearing impaired.

The venerable science fiction program Doctor Who returned to British televisions in 2005 after a 15-year absence and delighted the majority of fans and critics with its adherence to the adventure and charm of the original series while making admissions for a new generation of viewers (hipper editing and score, CGI effects).
