Documenta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This first documenta was - in contrast to most expectations - a considerable success as it featured most of the artists which are nowadays generally considered to have had a significant influence on modern art, e.g.
The more recent documentas feature art from all continents; nonetheless most of it is site-specific.
The documenta is by most art critiques perceived to be one of the most important art exhibitions in the whole world.

Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | Arts: Documenta's flawed collection   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Documenta's sprawling collection of art from around the globe is as fascinating and flawed as the world it reflects.
Documenta spreads itself throughout the city, from the Museum Fridericianum (one of the world's first public art galleries) to a disused brewery, from the ghastly Documenta Halle to the nearby park, in buildings running alongside the platforms of the main railway station, and in two cinemas within the station complex itself.
It is one of the current Documenta's unforgettable moments, of which there are many: the soldiers at the border crossing between Pakistan and India, performing their ritual - and, it seems, synchronised - changing of the guard to either side of the line.

Documenta began after WW II to expose the public to the modern art had been that outlawed by the National Socialists and had necessarily been neglected during the difficult period of reconstruction immediately following the war.
Documenta X is a courageous curatorial effort and has already been the target of much anger and criticism as well as admiration and respect.

Jan Hoet's Documenta IX missed its historic chance to bring new art from the former Soviet empire into the fold in 1992.
Across the hall is an overwhelming installation of brutally flened crates, bundles, trunks, jars, and racks of rolled drawings—capable of vanquishing perennial Documenta ghost Joseph Beuys—by the late Chohreh Feyzdjou, an Iranian-born Jew.
Documenta 11 reflects not only on "the postcolonial aftermath of globalization and the terrible nearness of distant places" (in Enwezor's words), but on art's ultimate inadequacy within the socio-cultural-political-historical context.

Art in America: Documenta 9: the bottom line - analysis of the importance of the art exhibition in Kassel, Germany
Before the renown of Documenta created periodic celebrity, the city's dominant 20th-century image was that of an arsenal and administrative center for the Third Reich.
And though previous Documentas have tapped firms for materials or special services, this was the first time that major cash contributions had been solicited and that companies were permitted to wed their logos to that of the Kassel spectacular.
Though cash contributions amounted to scarcely 10 percent of the total Documenta budget, purists were inclined to see even this as a threat to artistic freedom and an ungainly wedding of art and commerce.

Documenta XI is depressing for three reasons (I am not even counting the curators' ignorance of current new media art).

This Documenta seems to be a message of change to all those who would like to see art as something which represents the so called virtues of the "free west".

At the second site, the Documenta Halle, the curators segregated most of the documentary groups and artists who expected us to sit down in a noisy library-like environment and consult scattered piles of books, pamphlets and video screens.

Unlike its eponymous rival, this Documenta is not a grandiose global art-supermart, but, by the sounds of it, a truer, if not as daunting, interpretation of the processes of "documenting".
Condensed from the "other" Documenta's 100 days, this show will renew itself by changing the exhibited material every 100 minutes.
With over 2 000 artists from more than 40 countries represented, this won't be hard in terms of content, but an apparent nightmare in terms of logistics and simply being noticed amongst the fray.

Kassel Documenta   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Kassel Documenta is commonly compared to the Olympic games, but, being an inhabitant of former Eastern Empire, I remember great all-Union exhibitions held in the USSR, where regional unions of artists struggled fiercely for the right to ‘represent’.
Despite Documenta’s curator Okwui Enwezor announcing the end of Eurocentrist era to be his primary goal, one must as well draw attention to the fact that he is not only the first non-European curator of Documenta, but also a New York intellectual with a rapper’s attitude.
Therefore, it would be more appropriate to declare not the end of globalisation era, but changing of vector and transition from a Roman type empire with a Senate, CNN, gladiator arenas, McDonalds and aqueducts to a Byzantine model, where only basic religious concepts are unified, while local cultures develop in their own ways.

"documenta 12 magazine", or "a journal of journals", is the central project of documenta 12.
In many ways the documenta 12 magazine is an effort to engage the art community at the core of the Western "center", and one of its aims is to generate a discourse on decentralization.
Different stages such as, "100 days-100 guests" (documenta 10) and "5 Platforms" (documenta 11) were set up to involve artists, art critics, historians, social scientists, writers, and theoreticians from different parts of the world in an aesthetic and social discourse around themes and concepts of the documenta exhibitions.
